Handaxes as a Measure of the Mental Capabilities of Early Hominids
Journal of Archaeological Science, 2000Handaxes are often used to discuss the evolution of mental capabilities in early hominids. There are several reasons handaxes are used for this purpose, but principal among these is the notion that handaxe shape is an arbitrary imposition of form, on varied raw material, that reflects shared mental templates.
