Identifying Handwritten Text in Mixed Documents
18th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR'06), 2006In this paper we present a system for classification of machine printed and handwritten text in mixed documents. The classification is performed at the word level. We propose a feature extraction algorithm for each word image based on Gabor filters followed by classification using an expectation maximization (EM) based probabilistic neural network that

A System for Bangla Online Handwritten Text
2013 12th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2013Recognition of Bangla compound characters has rarely got attention from researchers. This paper deals with segmentation and recognition of online handwritten Bangla cursive text containing basic and compound characters and all types of modifiers. Here, at first, we segment cursive words into primitives. Next primitives are recognized.

A System for Handwritten and Printed Text Classification
2017 UKSim-AMSS 19th International Conference on Computer Modelling & Simulation (UKSim), 2017An optical character recognition (OCR) system recognizes either printed or handwritten text. Hence it is required to seperate machine printed text from handwritten text in scanned documents before feeding it to a OCR system. We can discriminate these two types of text word images by their visual impression and shape structures.

An architecture for handwritten text recognition systems
International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition, 1999This paper presents an end-to-end system for reading handwritten page images. Five functional modules included in the system are introduced in this paper: (i) pre-processing, which concerns introducing an image representation for easy manipulation of large page images and image handling procedures using the image representation; (ii) line separation ...

Handwritten text localization in skewed documents
Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. No.01CH37205), 2002A system for handwritten text localization in document images is proposed. Our system performs skew angle correction using the Wigner-Ville distribution and localizes the handwritten areas of the document based on several measures concerning regularity in shape (self-correlation, horizontal and vertical symmetry) and in dimensions (aspect ratio ...

A database for handwritten text recognition research
IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 1994An image database for handwritten text recognition research is described. Digital images of approximately 5000 city names, 5000 state names, 10000 ZIP Codes, and 50000 alphanumeric characters are included. Each image was scanned from mail in a working post office at 300 pixels/in in 8-bit gray scale on a high-quality flat bed digitizer.

Segmentation of offline handwritten Arabic text
2017 1st International Workshop on Arabic Script Analysis and Recognition (ASAR), 2017Arabic script is cursive in both printed and handwritten forms. This intrinsic nature of cursiveness renders the segmentation task challenging. An Arabic word generally consists of multiple parts known as Parts of Arabic Words (PAWs) or simply sub-words.

Influence of text line segmentation in Handwritten Text Recognition
2015 13th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR), 2015Text line segmentation is the process by which text lines in a document image are localized and extracted. It is an important step in off-line Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) given that the input of these systems is the line image of the text to be transcribed.

Continuous approach to segmentation of handwritten text
Proceedings Eighth International Workshop on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition, 2003A new approach to the segmentation of handwritten text is presented that is based on approximating a binary raster image with a set of polygons and building a continuous skeleton of those polygons. Polygons and skeletons are then used in extraction of lines, removing of spots and artifacts, extraction of words from lines and extraction of strokes from ...
