H 1-interpolation on quadrilateral and hexahedral meshes with hanging nodes
Computing (Vienna/New York), 2007The authors investigate a Scott-Zhang type linear interpolation of \(H^1\)-functions by continuous piecewise multilinear polynomials in two and three dimensions, respectively. This includes approximations on hierarchically generated nets with hanging nodes. The authors prove optimal local convergence rates.

Adaptive Finite Element Methods on Quadrilateral Meshes without Hanging Nodes
SIAM Journal of Scientific Computing, 2010Hanging nodes have some disadvantages in the implementation of adaptive finite element methods on quadrilateral meshes, which usually need further techniques to treat them. In this paper, we present a shape regular local refinement algorithm on quadrilateral meshes without hanging nodes, which can be viewed as an extension of the original red-green ...

A consistent octree hanging node elimination algorithm for hexahedral mesh generation
Advances in Engineering Software, 2014A new algorithm for hanging node elimination in octree structures is developed. The proposed algorithm utilizes hanging node elimination by refinement templates and a new mesh conditioning technique based on decoupling templates. Refinement templates insert transition elements to eliminate hanging nodes.

SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 2017
Summary: On adaptively refined quadrilateral or hexahedral meshes, one usually employs constraints on degrees of freedom to deal with hanging nodes. How these constraints are constructed is relatively straightforward for conforming finite element methods: The constraints are used to ensure that the discrete solution space remains a subspace of the ...
