Exposure to infected armadillos may be one means of acquiring the disease. The Mycobacterium leprae bacillus has a predilection for nerves and skin in the cooler areas of the body.

Hansen’s disease or leprosy is a chronic infection that has a predilection for the skin and peripheral nerves. A wide range of clinical presentations occur depending on the host’s response to the organism. Treatment is for at least 6 months to a year depending on the number of clinical lesions and bacilli at presentation.
