Feature based haptic rendering

ACM SIGGRAPH 97 Visual Proceedings: The art and interdisciplinary programs of SIGGRAPH '97 on - SIGGRAPH '97, 1997
3D I/O devices, long awaited in Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems, are finally available as force feedback devices such as PHANToM (SensAble Technologies, Inc.). This paper presents Feature Based Haptic Rendering (FBR), which provides haptic feedback of a more accurate shape required by the haptic man-machine interface for surface CAD than ...

Haptic rendering of photographs

2012 IEEE International Workshop on Haptic Audio Visual Environments and Games (HAVE 2012) Proceedings, 2012
Exploration of 2-D images is a challenging problem in computer haptics and research has primarily been focused on the exploration of restricted types of images, e.g., maps or mathematical curves. In contrast, this paper describes the design and implementation of a system for the haptic exploration of general photographs.

Haptic rendering and control

2008
In haptic simulations a human operator is coupled to a virtual environment, in such a way that the user is able to perceive the scene with his/her sense of touch. In Figure 1 the interaction paths between user and virtual world are shown. To obtain a good level of immersion, at least two interaction paths must be provided for haptic simulations, namely

Velocity driven haptic rendering

Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Computer graphics and interactive techniques in Australasia and South East Asia, 2005
This paper presents a compact method for improving haptic rendering in virtual environments using Level Of Detail (LOD) with force feedback. We have introduced a velocity driven LOD, a new concept in using LOD in haptics. The aim of this approach differs from using LOD techniques in graphics.

Haptic Rendering of Juggling with Encountered Type Interfaces

Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments, 2011
Haptic interaction in a virtual world can be tool mediated or direct; and, among direct interactions, the encountered haptic interfaces provide physical contact only when there is contact with a virtual object. This paper deals with the haptic rendering of the catching and throwing of objects by means of this type of interface. A general model for the

Towards realistic haptic rendering of surface texture

ACM SIGGRAPH 2005 Courses on - SIGGRAPH '05, 2005
The emerging science of haptic rendering consists of delivering properties of physical objects through the sense of touch. Owing to the recent development of sophisticated haptic-rendering algorithms, users can now experience virtual objects through touch in many exciting applications, including surgical simulations, virtual prototyping, and data per ...

Physically-inspired haptic rendering

Proceedings of the 2006 ACM international conference on Virtual reality continuum and its applications, 2006
Extending the frontier of visual computing, real-time physically-based interactions and haptic (touch-enabled) rendering have the potential to increase the quality of man-machine communication. By accommodating the sense of touch and introducing realistic modeling of physical elements, haptic interfaces provide an attractive augmentation to visual ...

Proxy-based haptic rendering for underactuated haptic devices

2017 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC), 2017
Standard haptic rendering algorithms are not well suited for underactuated haptic devices. They compute forces oblivious of underactuation, and then they simply project the resulting forces to the actuated subspace. We propose instead a proxy-based haptic rendering method that computes displacements in the actuated subspace only, and then translates ...

Image-Driven Haptic Rendering

2014
Haptic interaction requires the content creators to make haptic models of the virtual objects while it is not always possible or feasible, especially when it comes to using real images or videos as elements of interaction. We, therefore, propose tangible images and image-driven haptic rendering where a displayed image is used as a source of the force ...

Improved Haptic Rendering of Anatomical Data

2002
We perform haptic rendering of a polygonal mesh at a high speed, independent of its face count, using a topologically structured data representation that avoids edge gap effects from small numerical errors. Constraints on the virtual proxy's position on the mesh give good results in rendering concave edges.
