Haptoglobin as a Biomarker [PDF]

open access: yesBiochemistry (Moscow), Supplement Series B: Biomedical Chemistry, 2021
Haptoglobin (Hp) is a blood plasma glycoprotein that binds free hemoglobin (Hb) and plays a critical role in tissue protection and the prevention of oxidative damage. In addition, it has a number of regulatory functions. Haptoglobin is an acute phase protein, its concentration in plasma changes in pathology, and the test for its concentration is ...

Haptoglobin and malaria [PDF]

open access: yesRedox Report, 2001
Haptoglobin gene knockout mice and wild-type controls were infected with Plasmodium berghei ANKA or Plasmodium chabaudi. The peak parasitaemia and parasite burden were higher in Hp-/- mice than in Hp+/+ mice. The increase in spleen weight following malaria infection was smaller in Hp-/- mice than in Hp+/+ animals.

THE FREQUENCIES OF HAPTOGLOBIN TYPES IN FIVE POPULATIONS * [PDF]

open access: yes, 1958
Haptoglobin types have been determined by starch gel electrophoresis of blood from five populations. The gene frequencies obtained for allele Hp 1 were as follows: American whites, 043; American Negroes, 0.59; African Negroes, 0.72; Apaches, 0.59; and ...

Turbidimetric Determination of Haptoglobin [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, 1976
A specific, accurate and simple determination of haptoglobin is described with an antiserum against the antigenic determinants of the three haptoglobin phenotypes 1-1, 2-1 and 2-2. Antihaptoglobin is the determining factor in the formation of an antigen-antibody complex with maximal light absorption properties. Haptoglobin concentration is expressed as

The role of the host—Neutrophil biology

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Neutrophilic polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils) are myeloid cells packed with lysosomal granules (hence also called granulocytes) that contain a formidable antimicrobial arsenal. They are terminally differentiated cells that play a critical role in acute and chronic inflammation, as well as in the resolution of inflammation and wound ...

The natural history of periodontal disease: The Java study—Origin, implementation, and results 35 years on

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract This review describes the origin and results of the prospective longitudinal study to test potential prognostic indicators for periodontal breakdown in a population deprived of regular dental care. Experimental gingivitis studies in individuals highly susceptible or highly resistant to periodontitis showed that bleeding on probing developed ...

Dysbiosis and zonulin upregulation alter gut epithelial and vascular barriers in patients with ankylosing spondylitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Dysbiosis has been recently demonstrated in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) but its implications in the modulation of intestinal immune responses have never been studied.

Haptoglobin frequencies in Jewish communities * [PDF]

open access: yes, 1962
Haptoglobin and transferrin types have been determined by starch gel electrophoresis on blood from 929 subjects belonging to various Jewish communities. The frequency of the Hp 1 gene in 499 Ashkenazic Jews is 0.29 and does not differ significantly from ...
