Sexual dimorphism of Dall's porpoise and harbor porpoise skulls
Mammalian Biology, 2013To evaluate and quantify sexual dimorphism of skull shape and assess the ontogenetic background for differences, samples of 134 harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and 85 Dall's porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli) were compared in terms of cranial shape and shape ontogeny using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics.

Optics of the harbor porpoise eye in water
Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 1993A two-dimensional ray-tracing model for the harbor porpoise eye is constructed from new measurements, mainly on two enucleated eyes, and from data found in the literature. Model calculations show that the crystalline lens has too much refractive power to focus light on the retina.

Noise Exposure Criteria for Harbor Porpoises
2016Despite a major research effort, no generally accepted exposure limits are available for harbor porpoises. Recent studies of the temporary threshold shift (TTS) in porpoises indicate that the sound exposure levels (SELs) required to induce low levels of TTS depend on stimulus frequency and roughly parallel the shape of the audiogram.

Prey capture by harbor porpoises.
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2008The harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is a small toothed whale living mostly in coastal waters. There are large, but unknown, numbers in the inner Danish waters. Four are in captivity at Fjord Belt Center, Kerteminde, Denmark, one of which was born there in 2006.

Acoustic reflectivity of a harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2019Acoustic backscatter measurements were conducted on a stationary harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) under controlled conditions. The measurements were made with the porpoise in the broadside aspect using three different types of signals as follows: (1) a 475-ms linear frequency-modulated (FM) pulse with a frequency range from 23 to 160 kHz; (2) a ...

Spatial Impact of Wind Farm Construction on Harbor Porpoise Detectability
2023To combat impacts of climate change, offshore wind farm construction is accelerating globally. Accompanying increases in construction activity have raised concerns about associated noise impacts on acoustically sensitive species, including harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Mechanical properties of the harbor porpoise lung, Phocoena phocoena
Respiration Physiology, 1979The pressure-volume and pressure-flow characteristics of the excised lungs of 5 harbor porpoise were determined. It was found that: (1) in comparison to terrestrial mammals the lung volume relative to body weight is large, (2) the lungs are capable of emptying to less than 17% of total lung capacity, (3) peak expiratory flowrates of 5 to 10 vital ...

Rhizopusmycosis in a Harbor Porpoise from the Baltic Sea
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1999A case of systemic mycosis due to a Rhizopus sp. infection is described in a dead-stranded, 10-yr-old, male harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the beach of Neustadt, Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea (Germany). At necropsy, granulomatous mycotic lesions in brain, lung, kidneys, testis, and draining lymph nodes were found.

Hiatal Hernia in a Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1993We observed the displacement of the first compartment of the stomach through the diaphragmatic hiatus into the thoracic cavity in an immature harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). This hiatal hernia, coupled with a severe pneumonia, contributed to the emaciation and death of the animal.

Behavioral Reactions of Harbor Porpoise to Pile-Driving Noise
2012Pile driving of large steel monopiles in offshore waters has increased rapidly in recent years due to the expanding development of offshore wind energy. In particular, Phocoena phocoena (harbor porpoise) has been the focus of attention with respect to a possible negative impact.
