Aboveground herbivory elevates belowground rhizosphere volatile organic compound concentrations in ambient and polluted air, independent of volatile sampling methodology

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The effect of air pollution on plants is still underexplored, especially belowground. We used a field facility that released diesel exhaust and ozone at concentrations equivalent to those near a busy road in Reading, UK, to measure belowground gas exchange of Scots pine together with feeding by large pine weevils, a major pest of conifers.

Mating history shapes Wolbachia‐induced cytoplasmic incompatibility and female fitness in an insect pest

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Mating order and remating of females by males with different endosymbiont associations strongly shape Wolbachia‐induced cytoplasmic incompatibility, female fitness and offspring sex ratio. An incompatible first mating was weakly affected if followed by a compatible mating and vice versa, indicating strong first‐male sperm precedence with consequences ...

Presence and abundance of airborne Botryosphaeriaceae conidia are governed by temperature and season in the Okanagan Valley, Canada

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Presence and abundance of Botryosphaeria dieback inoculum were determined using spore trapping and droplet digital polymerase chain reaction in British Columbia, Canada. Highest inoculum was recorded in spring (April–June) and again in summer (July–September). These results suggest early pruning in December–January can mitigate pruning wound infections.

Comparison of nonchemical, organic and synthetic Varroa destructor control strategies in honey bee colonies: effects on parasite load, colony strength and health

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Combining intensive drone‐brood removal with brood interruption provided the most effective and consistent seasonal Varroa control. Abstract BACKGROUND Varroa destructor remains the most significant biotic threat to honey bee colonies, and increasing resistance to synthetic acaricides necessitates alternative control strategies.

An Enhanced Soft‐Containing Gripper for Pick‐And‐Place of Oyster Products at Extreme Handling Speed

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Soft robotic grippers have been developed for high‐speed handling of soft, fragile foods. For example, our previously designed soft‐containing gripper has been implemented on food production lines. However, existing soft robotic grippers remain inadequate for food pick‐and‐place tasks at extreme handling speeds (e.g., > 70 pcs/min).

Assessing Environmental and Economic Performance for Port Hydrogen Fuel Transition: A Case Study of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As society continues to develop, hydrogen has emerged as a promising fuel for maritime decarbonization. This study develops an integrated environmental and economic assessment framework for the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) by combining life‐cycle assessment, levelized cost analysis, and multi‐criteria decision analysis across 36 ...
