Molecular Palaeontology Prospects From Exceptionally Preserved Eocene Brackish‐Water Bivalve Batissa sitakaraensis (Venerida: Corbiculidae) From Hokkaido, Japan

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
This study reports the exceptional preservation of the Eocene freshwater bivalve Batissa sitakaraensis from Hokkaido, Japan. Multimodal analyses reveal that both the aragonitic shell mineralogy and the delicate organic periostracum retain their original structural and chemical characteristics after millions of years.

Gut virome orchestrates nitrogen partitioning between the host and microbiome

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
Under normal protein intake, lytic phages promote bacterial turnover, releasing microbial nitrogen that can be assimilated by the host and thereby revealing phage‐mediated lysis as a potential pathway for host nutrient acquisition. Under protein restriction, however, phages shift toward a lysogenic strategy, reducing bacterial death and microbial ...

Microbial communities and functional diversity in seafood

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Functional diversity encompasses ecosystem processes that enhance adaptability to environmental change. This study explores the diversity of microorganisms associated with seafood. In this paper, we present our knowledge of microbial diversity in relation to seafood.

Evaluation of agronomic traits and storage stability in novel rice cultivar ‘Baromi3’ combining floury endosperm and lipoxygenase 3 deficiency

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Rice milling characteristics and storage stability are critical traits influencing industrial applications. Floury endosperm rice carrying the flo4‐4 allele is valuable for dry milling but exhibits reduced storage stability associated with altered starch structural characteristics.

Bycatch of harbour porpoise, harbour seal and grey seal in Norwegian gillnet fisheries

open access: yes, 2016
Data from a monitored segment (about 20 vessels) of the fleet of about 6000 small vessels (less than 15 meters length overall) operating bottom-set gillnets for cod (Gadus morhua) and monkfish (Lophius piscatorius) in the Norwegian coastal zone were used

Protecting CEACAM1 Expression Prevents Diet‐Induced Metabolic Dysfunction and Hepatic Fibrosis in Male Mice

open access: yesObesity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective High‐fat diet represses Ceacam1 transcription via a PPARα‐mediated mechanism to cause insulin resistance before inflammation develops. The current study investigated whether mutating PPRE‐RXRα in Ceacam1 promoter prevents diet‐induced metabolic abnormalities and hepatic fibrosis in male C57BL6/J mice.

A dramaturgy of uncertainty: Transdisciplinary manoeuvres across forestry and theatre

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract The uncertainties of climate change mean that forestry adaptation strategies are often complex and contested. Research has suggested that there is an interest in the forestry sector for facilitated dialogue about uncertainty (de Pellegrin Llorente et al., 2023).

Soil health assessment using buried cotton underpants with the help of 1000 citizen scientists

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Soil is a vital resource for life on Earth. Although many soils are degraded, societal awareness of soil‐related issues is limited. To highlight soil as a key resource and fascinating study system, we initiated a citizen science project together with 1000 participants investigating soil health across Switzerland using buried cotton underpants.

Aboveground herbivory elevates belowground rhizosphere volatile organic compound concentrations in ambient and polluted air, independent of volatile sampling methodology

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The effect of air pollution on plants is still underexplored, especially belowground. We used a field facility that released diesel exhaust and ozone at concentrations equivalent to those near a busy road in Reading, UK, to measure belowground gas exchange of Scots pine together with feeding by large pine weevils, a major pest of conifers.
