XMM-Newton observation of the brightest X-ray flare detected so far from SgrA* [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We report the high S/N observation on October 3, 2002 with XMM-Newton of the brightest X-ray flare detected so far from SgrA* with a duration shorter than one hour (~ 2.7 ks).

Exploring Systems Thinking Typologies and Paradigms

open access: yesSAGE Open
Today’s agriculture, food, and natural resources (AFNR) sectors face many wicked problems like climate change. Addressing these complex problems will require people to have both social and technical knowledge.

A Schmid-Leiman based transformation resulting in perfect inter-correlations of three types of factor score predictors [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
Factor score predictors are to be computed when the individual scores on the factors are of interest. Conditions for a perfect inter-correlation of the regression/best linear factor score predictor, the best linear conditionally unbiased predictor, and the determinant best linear correlation-preserving predictor are presented. When these three types of

Early metastasis is characterized by Gr1+ cell dysregulation and is inhibited by immunomodulatory nanoparticles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Breast cancer metastasis is associated with myeloid cell dysregulation and the lung‐specific accumulation of tumor‐supportive Gr1+ cells. Gr1+ cells support metastasis, in part, through a CHI3L1‐mediated mechanism, which can be targeted and inhibited with cargo‐free, polymeric nanoparticles.

Detecting homologous recombination deficiency for breast cancer through integrative analysis of genomic data

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study develops a semi‐supervised classifier integrating multi‐genomic data (1404 training/5893 validation samples) to improve homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) detection in breast cancer. Our method demonstrates prognostic value and predicts chemotherapy/PARP inhibitor sensitivity in HRD+ tumours.

On connection of variations between hard cosmic ray flux, temperature and cardiovascular diseases in Vilnius and sunspot number during 2001–2012

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management, 2015
The connection has been found between the course of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and the hard cosmic ray flux (HCRF) near the ground surface in Vilnius. The course of air temperature and number of sunspot was simultaneously considered. The investigation

Matrix Factorizations via the Inverse Function Theorem [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
We give proofs of QR factorization, Cholesky's factorization, and LDU factorization using the inverse function theorem. As a consequence, we obtain analytic dependence of these matrix factorizations which does not follow immediately using Gaussian elimination.

New Structural Economics : A Framework for Rethinking Development

open access: yes, 2011
As strategies for achieving sustainable growth in developing countries are re-examined in light of the financial crisis, it is critical to take into account structural change and its corollary, industrial upgrading.

Systematic profiling of cancer‐fibroblast interactions reveals drug combinations in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Fibroblasts, cells in the tumor environment, support ovarian cancer cell growth and alter morphology and drug response. We used fibroblast and cancer cell co‐culture models to test 528 drugs and discovered new drugs for combination treatment. We showed that adding Vorinostat or Birinapant to standard chemotherapy may improve drug response, suggesting ...
