Uncertainty modeling for hard disk drives
2014 American Control Conference, 2014A modern hard disk drive uses a dual-stage actuator to read/write data on a track with width less than 100nm. The dual-stage actuator requires an advanced controller to achieve high performance on millions of hard disk drives. This paper presents a numerical algorithm utilizing convex optimization to create an uncertainty model, for the purpose of ...

Hard disk controller: the disk drive's brain and body
Proceedings 2001 IEEE International Conference on Computer Design: VLSI in Computers and Processors. ICCD 2001, 2002Integration of the hard disk controller (HDC) today has taken on an extensive amount of functionality. From the host interface, error correction code, disk sequencer, microprocessor(s), servo control logic, buffer controller, to the embedded memory, the HDC has become a true system on a chip. Depending on the product, embedded DRAM is used as buffering

Assessement of current health of hard disk drives
2009 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering, 2009After investigating several of different degradation signatures that can potentially characterize aging and failure of computer hard disk drives (HDDs), we identified that reported uncorrect, hardware ECC recovered and read write rate parameters can provide good degradation signature for assessing the condition and remaining useful life of HDDs.

Adaptive-repetitive control of a hard disk drive
2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2007This paper presents a control scheme intended to target both the non-repeatable and repeatable runout disturbances affecting the dynamics of a hard disk drive (HDD). The design can be broken up into three stages. The first stage consists of a LTI feedback controller designed using classical techniques.

Survey on energy-efficient hard drive disks
2017 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC), 2017Energy consumption has been brought to the forefront in the past decade. Energy efficiency is being considered in all phases of hardware and software design and implementation. High energy consumption is becoming an increasingly large burden for organizations and institutions hosting large-scale computing systems.

Impulsive disturbance rejection in hard disk drives
2010 11th International Conference on Control Automation Robotics & Vision, 2010This paper proposes filtering methods to cancel the impulsive disturbance contained in position error signal (PES) in hard disk drives (HDDs). The impulsive disturbances may be observed as a few single sudden changes or some consecutive changes in PES. The filtering includes impulsive disturbance identification and estimation.
