Hard disk controller: the disk drive's brain and body
Proceedings 2001 IEEE International Conference on Computer Design: VLSI in Computers and Processors. ICCD 2001, 2002Integration of the hard disk controller (HDC) today has taken on an extensive amount of functionality. From the host interface, error correction code, disk sequencer, microprocessor(s), servo control logic, buffer controller, to the embedded memory, the HDC has become a true system on a chip. Depending on the product, embedded DRAM is used as buffering

Hard disk drive recording and data detection
5th International Conference on Telecommunications in Modern Satellite, Cable and Broadcasting Service. TELSIKS 2001. Proceedings of Papers (Cat. No.01EX517), 2002The paper describes basic concepts of data recording and detection in hard disk drives. Both Lorentzian channel model and partial response (PR) signaling are described. State of the art maximum likelihood PR detection schemes are discussed together with PR frequency response analysis.

Precision control of hard disk drives
IEEE Control Systems, 2005The paper discusses the challenges and trends in the precision control of the head-positioning servomechanism of a hard disk drive. The read/write head is positioned through a voice coil motor (VCM) actuator to which the heads are attached using a thin stainless steel suspension. The servomechanism is expected to move the read/write head from one track

Using hard disk drive surrogates
INTER-NOISE and NOISE-CON Congress and Conference ProceedingsHDD surrogates measure disturbances which can degrade hard disk drive (HDD) performance. Two surrogate designs were developed and made available by the Storage HDD Dynamics Working Group under the Open Compute Project (OCP). The Phase 1 surrogate has two microphones to measure acoustic disturbances below 20000 Hz.

Use of MEMS based accelerometers in hard disk drives
2001 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics. Proceedings (Cat. No.01TH8556), 2002In this paper we describe the use of MEMS based accelerometers for the compensation of the effects of self-induced and external vibrations in commercial hard disk drives (HDD). Using a formal analysis on the HDD mechanics, the effects of a generic roto-translation of the HDD on the head position are evaluated.

Robust Control of a Hard Disk Drive
2013This chapter considers the design of a robust servo systemof hard disk drive(HDD). Three robust design methods are applied, namely, the μ-synthesis, \(\mathcal{H}_\infty\) optimal design and \(\mathcal{H}_\infty\) loop-shaping design procedure (LSDP). After a description of the HDD servo system dynamics in the first section, it is shown in details (in ...
