Small gear hardening with a CO2 laser
ICALEO '88: Proceedings of the Laser Materials Processing Conference, 1988The CO2 laser is a unique light source whose properties make it a powerful tool for materials processing. The laser’s ability to provide a collimated beam of coherent light allows light energy to be directed over distances without spreading out. In that this energy is in the form of light it propagates through air, no force is exerted on the workpiece,

Macropitting in Microsegregated Induction-Hardened Gear Tooth
Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention, 2014A sample from a large gear was submitted for investigation into the cause of apparent macropitting observed around the pitch line on the loaded face of one of the teeth. A banded (light and dark etching) martensitic structure was observed, which varied significantly in hardness. Cracking was observed to be isolated to the case-hardened surface.

Electron Beam Surface Hardening of Gear Teeth
Materials Science and Welding TechnologiesSurface hardening is an effective method enabling the improvement of the wear resistance of components subjected to friction, without the necessity of hardening the entire component. Because of easy dynamic deflection and focusing as well as due to very high heating rates, the use of electron beam enables the obtainment of layers characterised by ...
