Journal of X-Ray Science and Technology: Clinical Applications of Diagnosis and Therapeutics, 2017Beam hardening causes cupping and streaking artifacts in computed tomographic images, the presence of such artifacts can impair both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the reconstructed data. When the scanned object is composed of a single material, it is possible to correct beam hardening artifacts using the linearization method.

In contrast to stationary induction hardening, the progressive treatment makes it necessary to include a heat flow in the axial direction of the work piece; a single coil also leads to a magnetic field which changes in the axial direction.
