We argue that successfulfulfillment of husbands' and wives' role obligations in the household affects psychological well-being. Ongoing economic hardship-the inability to adequately feed, clothe, and provide medical care for the family-indicates unsuccessful fulfillment of both breadwinner and homemaker obligations.
