Harmonic Scalpel Assisted Superficial Parotidectomy

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 2014
Objective: The Harmonic Scalpel (HS) has been recently widely used to perform a variety of surgical procedures. We reviewed our experience with the use of HS in superficial parotidectomy to determine the safety and efficacy of this procedure, with regard to operative time, postoperative facial nerve function, and drainage output.

Harmonic scalpel™ in laparoscopic colorectal surgery

Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, 2001
With advances in laparoscopy, various hemostatic procedures have been advocated with variable results. Using currently available tools, some steps in laparoscopic colorectal surgery still represent technical challenges. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility and reliability of the Harmonic Scalpel in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. In this ...

Harmonic Scalpel: Initial Experience

Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals, 2001
A Harmonic Scalpel was used to harvest arterial conduits in 80 patients undergoing coronary bypass grafting (group 1). Another 80 patients had electrocautery (group 2). Off-pump beating heart coronary grafting was performed in 24 patients in group 1 and 18 in group 2; these patients underwent coronary angiography.

The harmonic scalpel: An intraoperative complication

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 1996
The harmonic scalpel is an ultrasonically activated surgical instrument for tissue dissection. Despite its expanding surgical applications, there are no reports about associated complications.A 35-year-old woman sustained injury to the sigmoid colon from the use of the harmonic scalpel during laparoscopic lysis of pelvic adhesions.

Ultrasonic (harmonic) scalpel tonsillectomy

Operative Techniques in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, 2002
Significant postoperative pain and discomfort continues to be associated with a tonsillectomy procedure. Various instruments have been used over the years, but in an attempt to simplify the surgical procedure and minimize the postoperative morbidity, the ultrasonic (harmonic) scalpel uses high frequency piezoelectric technology to create intracellular ...

Ultrasonic harmonic scalpel in total thyroidectomies

Advances in Therapy, 2008
Haemostasis is very important in thyroid surgery. In conventional surgery, electrocoagulation and suture ligation are used for haemostasis; newer techniques include vessel clips, ultrasonic instruments and lasers. The aim of this prospective study was to compare the usage of the ultrasonic harmonic scalpel (UHS) with conventional procedures, in total ...

Modified radical mastectomy using harmonic scalpel

Journal of Surgical Oncology, 2000
Modified radical mastectomy (MRM) remains the most commonly performed surgery for breast cancer today. Conventional surgery using scalpel and electrocautery is associated with moderate blood loss and morbidity in the form of haematoma, flap necrosis, prolonged axillary drainage, and seroma.

Laparoscopic Nephrectomy Using the Harmonic Scalpel

Journal of Endourology, 1997
Laparoscopic nephrectomy is gaining popularity. Improved instrumentation is making surgery easier with fewer complications. Our first three laparoscopic nephrectomies using the Harmonic Scalpel were performed on two women and one man. The surgical indications were nonfunctioning kidneys (two left, one right) with hypertension in one patient and stone ...

Harmonic scalpel in transanal microsurgery.

Hepato-gastroenterology, 2008
Retrospective clinical study of patients with rectal tumors treated by transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) using Ultracision. From 1997-2006 54 patients were treated by excision of the rectal tumors situated in the middle and distal portion, using the harmonic scalpel. We treated 25 male (range 40-76 years) and 29 female (range 46-80 years) patients.
