Harmonic scalpel tonsillectomy: a prospective study

European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, 2005
The harmonic scalpel has been in use for tonsillectomy for the last 5-6 years in western Europe and North America. Although some studies have found this technique to be superior to other conventional methods, its use is still not very popular. In this single-blinded prospective study, the intraoperative events and postoperative morbidity after the use ...

Hepatic resection using the harmonic scalpel

Surgery Today, 2000
We describe herein our technique of performing extensive resection of the liver by blunt dissection in combination with excision using a harmonic scalpel. A ball coagulator was inserted at 3-cm intervals along the proposed cutting line in the liver, and the liver parenchyma between these holes was then cut using coagulation shears.

Harmonic Scalpel® vs. electrocautery hemorrhoidectomy

Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, 2001
Management of posthemorrhoidectomy pain remains a very unsatisfactory clinical dilemma. Compared with electrocautery and laser, the Harmonic Scalpel causes minimal lateral thermal injury during tissue dissection. The aim of the study was to establish whether decreased lateral thermal injury translated into diminished posthemorrhoidectomy pain.A ...

Harmonic scalpel tonsillectomy: Technical considerations

Operative Techniques in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, 2002
Among the latest innovations in the field of otolaryngology is the application of ultrasonically-activated instruments such as the Harmonic scalpel (Ethicon Endosurgery, Cincinnati, OH) to tonsillectomy. Preliminary reports have suggested that the Harmonic scalpel might represent the much pursued compromise between the precision and fast healing of the

Use of harmonic scalpel in sphincter pharyngoplasty

British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2014
Sphincter pharyngoplasty is done to treat velopharyngeal dysfunction. Traditionally, cold steel is used and haemostasis is achieved using bipolar cautery. The main complication is haemorrhage. Around 0.5%–2.0% of patients undergoing pharyngeal flap surgery have serious perioperative and postoperative haemorrhage from the surgical site,1 which can have ...

Use of the harmonic scalpel in thyroidectomy

ANZ Journal of Surgery, 2009
AbstractThyroidectomy is a surgical procedure that requires meticulous dissection, safe anatomical exposure and effective haemostasis. Use of the harmonic scalpel in thyroidectomy may assist in achieving these goals, particularly in respect to enabling efficient haemostatic coagulation and division of small vessels. This report demonstrates the results
