Self-Excitation and Harmonics in Wind Power Generation

Journal of Solar Energy Engineering, 2005
Traditional wind turbines are commonly equipped with induction generators because they are inexpensive, rugged, and require very little maintenance. Unfortunately, induction generators require reactive power from the grid to operate; capacitor compensation is often used.

Aggregation and amplification of wind-turbine harmonic emission in a wind park

2015 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2015
This paper presents measurements of harmonic and interharmonic current (with 5-Hz frequency resolution) in the complex plane. The complex currents are spread around a center point. For interharmonics, this center corresponds to the origin of the complex plane. For integer harmonics, this center is offset from the origin.

Harmonic analysis for fixed-speed wind turbines

2013 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2013
This paper presents harmonic analysis of a fixed-speed wind turbine in a utility distribution system. It shows a condition of how the wind turbine may be involved in harmonic resonance through its power factor correction capacitors. In addition the effect of wind speed on the resonant frequency is also considered.

Equivalent Network for Wind Farm Harmonic Assessments

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2010
There is a global commitment to tackle climate change which is evidenced by a huge surge in the uptake of renewable generation, mainly wind in the energy supply industries. Against this background, the effects of these vast numbers of connections to transmission and distribution system will have a critical impact on the standard and quality of supply ...

Review of harmonics in offshore wind farms

2013 48th International Universities' Power Engineering Conference (UPEC), 2013
This paper presents a review of harmonics in offshore wind farm systems. The aim is to gather information of mathematical models for harmonic analysis in wind farms and algorithms to configure offshore network interconnections. A thorough literature review is presented that may help to develop a solution in MatLab or LabView for harmonic analysis in ...

Harmonics in Offshore Wind Power Plants

2016
This book reports on cutting-edge findings regarding harmonic stability assessment for offshore wind power plants (OWPPs). It presents a timely investigation of the harmonic stability interaction between OWPPs on the one hand, and associated control systems in the wind turbines and other power electronic devices in the transmission system on the other.

Harmonic current characteristic analysis for wind turbines

2013 IEEE 10th International Conference on Power Electronics and Drive Systems (PEDS), 2013
This paper analyzes the harmonic current characteristic of wind turbines. Field measurement, data sorting, and analysis are conducted for wind turbine. Most wind turbines at present use a power converter and are equipped with harmonic filters, the control results of these equipments will become highly stochastic as wind speed changes.

Secondary Harmonic Emission in Wind Power Plants

2019 IEEE Milan PowerTech, 2019
The harmonic emission of wind power plants into the public grid is an important part of studies for connecting such plants to the power system. However, the transfer of emission between individual wind turbines within the collection grid is normally not considered. Neither are different grid impedance scenarios considered.

Wind farm integration in a harmonic environment

2015 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference (EPEC), 2015
Designing and constructing wind farms free of harmonics remain an ongoing challenge for the power industry. To ensure system stability and asset longevity, locally generated harmonics should be regularly monitored, evaluated and filtered when exceeding industry standard limits.
