Drivers of population dynamics and juvenile mortality in Northwest Atlantic harp seals. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Appl
Abstract Human‐induced threats to terrestrial and marine wildlife are on the rise, and while some species face a single major threat, others face multiple concurrent threats. Harp seals, an abundant pinniped in the North Atlantic that was historically depleted by human harvest, are one such species. Although commercial and subsistence harvests remain a

Large Igneous Province Record Through Time and Implications for Secular Environmental Changes and Geological Time‐Scale Boundaries

open access: yesGeophysical Monograph Series, Page 1-26., 2021

Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact

An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.

Multi-dietary tracer approach reveals little overlap in foraging ecology between seasonally sympatric ringed and harp seals in the high Arctic

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
The rapid rate of climate change in the Arctic is causing broad-scale changes to the physical environment and biological communities. Characterizing the foraging ecology and habitat use of Arctic marine top predators of high ecological and cultural ...

Evaluation of the Preservation and Digestion of Seal Meat Processed with Heating and Antioxidant Seal Meat Hydrolysates

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2022
Seal meat is of high nutritive value but is not highly exploited for human food due to ethical issues, undesirable flavors, and loss of nutrients during the processing/cooking step.

Polar bear diet composition reveals spatiotemporal distribution of Arctic marine mammals across Nunavut, Canada

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
Climate warming and associated physical and biological changes will likely force widespread species redistribution, particularly in polar environments. However, tracking such distributional shifts is difficult.

Pseudopregnancy in harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) [PDF]

open access: yesReproduction, 1994
Concentrations of circulating progesterone were monitored in a captive breeding group of harp seals. Five females were monitored for 2 years, over which time they either became pregnant (four instances) or displayed an overt pseudopregnancy (five instances). Only one female exhibited consecutive pseudopregnancies.

Report of the NAMMCO-ICES Workshop on Seal Modelling (WKSEALS 2020)

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2021
To support sustainable management of apex predator populations, it is important to estimate population size and understand the drivers of population trends to anticipate the consequences of human decisions. Robust population models are needed, which must

In search of virus carriers of the 1988 and 2002 phocine distemper virus outbreaks in European harbour seals [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
European harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) populations decreased substantially during the phocine distemper virus (PDV) outbreaks of 1988 and 2002. Different hypotheses have stated that various seals and terrestrial carnivore species might be the source of ...

Recent Harp and Hooded Seal Pup Production Estimates in the Greenland Sea Suggest Ecology-Driven Declines

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2022
Pup production of the Greenland Sea populations of harp (Pagophilus groenlandicus) and hooded (Cystophora cristata) seals were estimated based upon aerial surveys in March 2018.

First independent feeding of harp seal (Phoca groenlandica) and hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) pups in the Greenland Sea

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2000
Data were collected from harp seal (Phoca groenlandica) and hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) pups belonging to the Greenland Sea (or "West Ice") stocks in 1995-1997.
