Comparing Watershed‐Based eDNA Sampling and Camera Trapping for Assessing Mammal Diversity in North‐Western Bhutan

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
We collected environmental DNA (eDNA) from river and stream water samples and processed it through DNA extraction, amplification and metabarcoding. Species were identified from sequence data and compared with camera trapping data to evaluate the effectiveness of eDNA for monitoring wild mammals in north‐western Bhutan.

Characterisation of North American Brucella isolates from marine mammals.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Extension of known ecological niches of Brucella has included the description of two novel species from marine mammals. Brucella pinnipedialis is associated predominantly with seals, while two major Brucella ceti clades, most commonly associated with ...

A Ground Surface Rolling Method for Detecting Environmental DNA of Terrestrial Animals

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
The Koro‐rin sampler enables surface‐based eDNA detection of terrestrial animals. This approach captured a broad range of bird and mammal taxa, including small and cryptic species, and revealed seasonal patterns in animal presence, complementing conventional monitoring methods.

International Trade in Harp and Hooded Seals [PDF]

open access: yesOryx, 1980
Every year the killing of harp and hooded seals off Newfoundland and in the St Lawrence Gulf raises a public outcry, especially over the clubbing of the whitecoat pups. In 1979 IUCN scientists suggested to the Canadian Government that the quotas were too high and could be imperilling the stocks.

Assessment of impacts and potential mitigation for icebreaking vessels transiting pupping areas of an ice-breeding seal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Icebreaker operations in the Arctic and other areas are increasing rapidly to support new industrial activities and shipping routes, but the impact on pinnipeds in these habitats is poorly explored.

Blood dynamics of mercury and selenium in northern elephant seals during the lactation period [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The effects of reproduction and maternal investment (i.e., milk transfer) on trace element levels remain poorly understood in marine mammals. We examined the blood dynamics of mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) during lactation in the northern elephant seal (

On Prophoca and Leptophoca (Pinnipedia, Phocidae) from the Miocene of the North Atlantic realm : redescription, phylogenetic affinities and paleobiogeographic implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Prophoca and Leptophoca represent the oldest known genera of phocine seals, dating from the latest early to middle Miocene. Originally, Prophoca rousseaui and Prophoca proxima were described based on fragmentary remains from the Miocene of ...

Low density of top predators (seabirds and marine mammals) in the high Arctic pack ice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The at-sea distribution of top predators, seabirds and marine mammals, was determined in the high Arctic pack ice on board the icebreaker RV Polarstern in July to September 2014. In total, 1,620 transect counts were realised, lasting 30 min each.
