Hawaii Data: Women's Marital Surname Change by Bride's Age and Jurisdiction of Residence

open access: yesNames, 2011
Retaining or hyphenating one's premarital surname among brides marrying in Hawaii in 2006 was significantly correlated with average income of women and the average income of men in the bride's state of residence.

Hiding in Plain Sight - Recovering Clusters of Galaxies with the Strongest AGN in Their Cores [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A key challenge in understanding the feedback mechanism of AGN in Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) is the inherent rarity of catching an AGN during its strong outburst phase. This is exacerbated by the ambiguity of differentiating between AGN and clusters in X-ray observations.

Does dose calculation algorithm affect the dosimetric accuracy of synthetic CT for MR‐only radiotherapy planning in brain tumors?

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose This study compares the dosimetric accuracy of deep‐learning‐based MR synthetic CT (sCT) in brain radiotherapy between the Analytical Anisotropic Algorithm (AAA) and AcurosXB (AXB). Additionally, it proposes a novel metric to predict the dosimetric accuracy of sCT for individual post‐surgical brain cases.

The Onset of Methane in L Dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We have detected weak absorption features produced by the strong nu(3) methane band at 3.3 microns in two L dwarfs, 2MASSW J1507476-162738 and 2MASSI J0825196+211552, classified by Kirkpatrick et al. (2000) as spectral types L5 and L7.5 respectively. These absorptions occur in objects warmer than any in which methane previously has been detected, and ...

Impact of acceleration treatment on treatment plan and delivery qualities in tomotherapy for lung cancer

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Acceleration treatment (AT) is a novel treatment planning parameter introduced in the tomotherapy‐dedicated treatment planning system, Precision. This study explores the effects of AT on tomotherapy plans using helical (TomoHelical) and direct (TomoDirect) irradiation techniques.

Evaluating the role of land cover and climate uncertainties in computing gross primary production in Hawaiian Island ecosystems.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Gross primary production (GPP) is the Earth's largest carbon flux into the terrestrial biosphere and plays a critical role in regulating atmospheric chemistry and global climate.

Semi‐automated hippocampal avoidance whole‐brain radiotherapy planning

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Hippocampal avoidance whole‐brain radiotherapy (HA‐WBRT) is designed to spare cognitive function by reducing radiation dose to the hippocampus during the treatment of brain metastases. Current manual planning methods can be time‐consuming and may vary in quality, necessitating the development of automated approaches to streamline ...

Geographic variation in venom allelic composition and diets of the widespread predatory marine gastropod Conus ebraeus. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2009
BACKGROUND:Members of the predatory gastropod genus Conus use a venom comprised of a cocktail of peptide neurotoxins, termed conotoxins or conopeptides, to paralyze prey and conotoxin gene family members diversify via strong positive selection.

Further evidence of humpback whale presence in deep tropical ocean during the breeding season: confirmation and extension of acoustic detections between Hawaii and Mexico

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
During winter humpback whales converge on tropical breeding grounds characterized by shallow, warm seas. In the eastern half of the North Pacific two such breeding grounds are located along the shorelines and shallows of Mexico, and in mid-ocean around ...

Surface dose analysis and dosimetric comparison of Halcyon versus Truebeam in breast cancer radiotherapy: An OSL dosimetry study

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Breast cancer is a neoplastic disease with high prevalence among women. Radiotherapy is one of the principal treatment modalities for this disease, but it poses significant challenges. This study aimed to compare and evaluate the technical and dosimetric performance of conventional C‐arm linac systems and a new design, Halcyon, in the ...
