Tiny predators avoid herbivorous caterpillar traces to prevent accidental predation

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract We report the first example of predators having a strategy to avoid accidental predation by herbivorous insects. The predatory mites Neoseiulus womersleyi and Euseius sojaensis are smaller than 0.5 mm and lay eggs on plant leaf surfaces; thus, their immobile eggs would be incidentally consumed along with leaves by voracious lepidopteran ...

Three new species of the Xylophanes crotonis species-group (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) from Colombia and a neotype designation for Xylophanes aristor

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2021
Three new species of the hawkmoth genus Xylophanes Hübner, 1819 from Colombia are described based on morphological characters and DNA barcodes: Xylophanes camilae Correa-Carmona & Giusti sp. n., Xylophanes pijao Giusti & Correa-Carmona sp.

The diversity and evolution of pollination systems in large plant clades: Apocynaceae as a case study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background and Aims Large clades of angiosperms are often characterized by diverse interactions with pollinators, but how these pollination systems are structured phylogenetically and biogeographically is still uncertain for most families. Apocynaceae is

Hawkmoth flight in the unsteady wakes of flowers [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 2018
AbstractFlying animals maneuver and hover through environments where wind gusts and flower wakes produce unsteady flow. Although both flight maneuvers and aerodynamic mechanisms have been studied independently, little is known about how these interact in an environment where flow is already unsteady.

Kinetics of Elastic Recoil in the Wings of the cicada, Dundubia rufivena

open access: yesNatural Sciences, Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2026.
We quantify elastic recoil in cicada wings using high‐speed videography, revealing faster bending than torsional recoil. Wing stiffness increases when attached to the thorax, demonstrating a body‐wing spring system and highlighting that elastic recoil must be understood through whole‐organism mechanics rather than isolated wing properties.

Uncovering the physics of flapping flat plates with artificial evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We consider an experiment in which a rectangular flat plate is flapped with two degrees of freedom, and a genetic algorithm tunes its trajectory parameters so as to achieve maximum average lift force, thus evolving a population of trajectories all ...

Structural stability of plant–pollinator interactions despite seasonal abundance of long‐tongued hawkmoths

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2026, Issue 4, April 2026.
Seasonal environmental cycles affect plant–pollinator interactions by altering plant phenology. Periods of low resource availability can filter pollinators and reduce the complexity of interaction networks, but the extent to which the functional morphology of pollinators influences such filtering remains unclear.

Do honeybees act as pollen thieves or pollinators of Datura wrightii?

open access: yesJournal of Pollination Ecology, 2018
Datura wrightii (Solanaceae), a common shrub in the southwestern United States, bears massive, white, night-blooming flowers that attract and reward hawkmoth pollinators.

A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study of Hawkmoth Hovering [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 1998
ABSTRACT A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling approach is used to study the unsteady aerodynamics of the flapping wing of a hovering hawkmoth. We use the geometry of a Manduca sexta-based robotic wing to define the shape of a three-dimensional ‘virtual’ wing model and ‘hover’ this wing, mimicking accurately the three-dimensional
