Flash Mixing on the White Dwarf Cooling Curve: Spectroscopic Confirmation in NGC 2808 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
[Abridged] We present new HST FUV spectroscopy of 24 hot evolved stars in NGC2808, a massive globular cluster with a large population of "blue-hook" (BHk) stars. The BHk stars are found in UV color-magnitude diagrams of the most massive globular clusters, where they fall at luminosities immediately below the hot end of the horizontal branch (HB), in a ...

Engineering habits of mind in preschool children at Scottish forest nurseries and Australian bush kinders

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Nature‐based learning environments for early childhood are expanding, as is research into their affordances and pedagogies. Engineering in these environments is not well studied. Previous work considered engineering experiences through the lens of ‘designerly play’, finding that natural materials, the space for larger creations and ...

Determinants of bank lending performance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
During the last years the lending business has come under considerable competitive pressure and bank managers often express concern regarding its profitability vis-a-vis other activities.

Antibacterial hydrogel: The sniper of chronic wounds

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
The treatment of chronic wounds has always been an important challenge in the medical field. We focus on hydrogels not only because they provide a moist healing environment but also because compared with traditional dressings, they can effectively prevent and treat infections, reduce wound pain and scar formation.

Determining the parameters in a social welfare function using stated preference data: an application to health [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
One way in which economists might determine how best to balance the competing objectives of efficiency and equity is to specify a social welfare function (SWF).

Optimization of Lithium‐Ion Battery Circular Economy in Electric Vehicles in Sustainable Supply Chain

open access: yesBattery Energy, Volume 4, Issue 2, March 2025.
Lithium batteries constitute a pivotal component in electric vehicles (EVs) owing to their rechargeability and high‐power output capabilities. ABSTRACT Lithium batteries constitute a pivotal component in electric vehicles (EVs) owing to their rechargeability and high‐power output capabilities.

Representations of the ultrahyperbolic BMS group HB. III. Determination of the representations induced from finite little groups [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
The ordinary Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group B is the common asymptotic symmetry group of all asymptotically flat Lorentzian space-times. As such, B is the best candidate for the universal symmetry group of General Relativity. However, in studying quantum gravity, space-times with signatures other than the usual Lorentzian one, and complex space-times,

Mass Loss On the Horizontal Branch: an Application to NGC6791 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The presence of a substantial number of hot stars in the extremely metal-rich} open cluster NGC6791 has been a mystery. If these hot stars are in their core helium burning phase, they are significantly bluer (hotter) than predicted by canonical stellar evolution theory. No obvious explanation is available yet.

Ethnomedicinal Uses, Phytochemistry, Pharmacological Activities, and Toxicology of the Subfamily Gomphrenoideae (Amaranthaceae): A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The subfamily Gomphrenoideae is composed of about 480 accepted species, many of which have been historically used as medicinal plants, reason why they have been studied in terms of chemical profile, biological activity, and safety. This review consolidates the advances in research on this subfamily over the past 47 years, emphasizing its ...

Glycans and Chirality: Stereoselectivity at the Core of DC‐SIGN's Recognition. A Novel View of the Optimum Minimal Ligand Epitope

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
The stereochemical diversity of the “glycan code” enables similar chiral motifs to arise from both D‐ and L‐sugars. Focused on DC‐SIGN–glycan recognition, two diverse monosaccharide scaffolds, D‐Man (D‐Rha) and L‐Gal (L‐Fuc), maintain the exquisite stereochemistry encoded in the minimal binding epitope.
