Overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off in metastable dual-phase heterogeneous structures using variable temperature rolling and annealing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
A novel variable temperature rolling (VTR) and annealing process was conducted on a metastable austenitic stainless steel. Strain softening occurred during tensile straining in both cold rolled and cryogenic rolled-annealed steels, leading to low uniform

Superior strength–ductility combination in Al alloys via dislocation gradient structure

open access: yesMaterials Research Letters, 2023
The precipitation hardening is widely applied to strengthen Al alloys. Here, we report an alternative way to achieve high-strength Al alloys via forming the dislocation gradient through pre-torsion.

Heterostructured materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Heterostructured (HS) materials are a new class of materials that are composed of heterogeneous zones with dramatically different (>100 %) mechanical or physical properties.

Hierarchical microstructure enables high strength and good ductility in as-cast Fe27Ni35Cr18.25Al13.75Co2Ti2Mo2 high-entropy alloy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
As-cast alloys often require complex thermomechanical processing to obtain a hierarchical structure to achieve a good combination of strength and ductility.

Spontaneous Long‐Range Order and Alignment in Phase‐Separated Dynamic Covalent Networks Using Discrete Siloxanes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Spontaneously aligned, long‐range hexagonal columnar ordering is obtained in phase‐separated dynamic covalent networks by combining discrete siloxanes and dynamic acylsemicarbazide bonds. The ordered network shows improved (thermo)mechanical properties and creep resistance compared to the disordered network.

Caging Polyhalide Anions in Polycyclodextrin for Long‐Lasting Aqueous Zinc‐Iodine Batteries

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
We demonstrated poly(β‐cyclodextrin) gel as an ideal host material that effectively contains and releases polyhalide anions in aqueous zinc‐iodine batteries. Such a unique host‐guest chemistry prevents the shuttle effect of polyhalides. The corresponding batteries can operate via both 2e and 4e storage, attaining 60,000 cycles with more than 99% and 85%

Developing high-strength and ductile Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy sheet via bimodal grain structure coupling with heterogeneously-distributed precipitates

open access: yesMaterials Research Letters, 2023
Achieving high strength-ductility synergy in hard-to-deform high-alloyed Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloys by rolling remains a great challenge. In this work, a Mg-8.2Gd-3.8Y-1.0Zn-0.4Zr (wt.%) alloy sheet possessing a high yield strength (YS) of ∼385 MPa, ultimate ...

Effect of layered heterogeneous microstructure design on the mechanical behavior of medium carbon steel

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2022
A heterogeneous microstructure composed of multiscale ferrite (spanning ultrafine, fine, and coarse grains) and granular or short rod cementite was obtained by warm rolling pseudoeutectoid microstructure.

Breaking the Trade‐Off of Mechanical Robustness and Energy Storage Capacity in Phase Change Materials Through a Molecular Design Strategy of Hard‐Segment‐Anchored/Side‐Chain‐Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
To decouple mechanical robustness and energy storage capacity in phase change materials (PCMs), a series of polyurethane‐based PCMs bearing crystallizable alkyl side chains are synthesized via a hard‐segment‐anchored/side‐chain‐storage molecular design.
