Muscle Control of an Extra Robotic Digit

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study compares muscle‐ and movement‐based control for operating a supernumerary robotic thumb. While movement control performs better in the proposed tasks, muscle‐based (EMG) control promotes broader motor learning. The results highlight the promise and challenges of using biosignals for human augmentation, offering new insights into intuitive ...

Origami‐Inspired Structural Design for Aquatic‐Terrestrial Amphibious Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a lightweight amphibious origami robot actuated by a single shape memory alloy wire. A rigid foldable origami structure with displacement amplification enables efficient terrestrial crawling and aquatic swimming. The addition of fan‐shaped units allows controllable turning in both environments.

A Soft Robotic Fish With a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator Body and Negative Stiffness Spine

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work introduces a bio‐mimetic soft robotic fish driven by fiber‐reinforced dielectric elastomer actuators integrated as its body. By prestretching this active skin against a flexible spine, a negative stiffness system is created, enabling large‐amplitude bending.

Data‐Driven Bulldozer Blade Control for Autonomous Terrain Leveling

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A simulation‐driven framework for autonomous bulldozer leveling is presented, combining high‐fidelity terramechanics simulation with a neural‐network‐based reduced‐order model. Gradient‐based optimization enables efficient, low‐level blade control that balances leveling quality and operation time.

Design and Modeling of a High‐Displacement, Skin‐Integrated Flexible Electromagnetic Actuator for Haptic Interfaces in Virtual Reality

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A flexible, skin‐integrated electromagnetic actuator is developed for wearable virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) haptic systems. A tunable design model enables control over displacement and resonance frequency. The system is validated through a custom VR application with a 6 × 4 actuator array, demonstrating real‐time, spatially targeted tactile ...

Amplifying Head Movements with Head-Mounted Displays [PDF]

open access: possiblePresence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments, 2003
The head-mounted display (HMD) is a popular form of virtual display due to its ability to immerse users visually in virtual environments (VEs). Unfortunately, the user's virtual experience is compromised by the narrow field of view (FOV) it affords, which is less than half that of normal human vision.

Head movement propensity

Experimental Brain Research, 1992
In studies of human eye-head coordinated saccadic gaze shifts, different laboratories have found greatly different magnitudes of head movements for a given amplitude of gaze shift (head movement gain). The present study was conducted to examine why, and to quantify volitional head movements.

Head Rotation Movement Times

Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 2017
Objective: The aim of this study was to measure head rotation movement times in a Fitts’ paradigm and to investigate the transition region from ballistic movements to visually controlled movements as the task index of difficulty (ID) increases. Background:
