A Neural Model of How the Brain Computes Heading from Optic Flow in Realistic Scenes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Animals avoid obstacles and approach goals in novel cluttered environments using visual information, notably optic flow, to compute heading, or direction of travel, with respect to objects in the environment.

Financial Burden Associated With Hospitalisation Among Families of Childhood Brain Tumours in Australia

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Families of children with cancer experience significant financial strain, even with universal healthcare. Indirect costs, such as productivity losses and non‐medical expenses, are rarely included in economic evaluations, and little is known about how effectively financial aid programmes alleviate this burden. Childhood brain tumours

Cooperative localization by dual foot-mounted inertial sensors and inter-agent ranging

open access: yes, 2013
The implementation challenges of cooperative localization by dual foot-mounted inertial sensors and inter-agent ranging are discussed and work on the subject is reviewed. System architecture and sensor fusion are identified as key challenges. A partially

Head Pose Estimation for Sign Language Video [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We address the problem of estimating three head pose angles in sign language video using the Pointing04 data set as training data. The proposed model employs facial landmark points and Support Vector Regression learned from the training set to identify yaw and pitch angles independently. A simple geometric approach is used for the roll angle.

‘They Need to Hear You Say It’: Healthcare Professionals’ Perspectives on Barriers and Enablers to End‐of‐Life Discussions With Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT End‐of‐life conversations with adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer rarely occur without the guidance of healthcare professionals. As a part of the ‘Difficult Discussions’ study, focused on palliative care and advance care planning discussions with AYAs with cancer, we investigated the factors that healthcare professionals identify ...

Head detection and orientation estimation for pedestrian safety [PDF]

open access: yes17th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC), 2014
Head detection and orientation estimation are a vital component in the intention recognition of pedestrians. In this paper we propose a novel framework to detect highly occluded pedestrians and estimate their head orientation. De- tection is performed for pedestrian's heads only.

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Integrative Neuromuscular Training for Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Pilot Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) often exhibit early deficits in muscle and movement competence, which can compromise long‐term health. Integrative neuromuscular training (INT), a multifaceted approach combining fundamental movement activities with strength exercises, may help address these deficits during ...

Integration of GNSS and BLE Technology With Inertial Sensors for Real-Time Positioning in Urban Environments

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2021
The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is widely used in smartphone positioning, but its performance can be degraded in urban environments because of signal reflections or blockages.

Face Alignment Assisted by Head Pose Estimation [PDF]

open access: yesProcedings of the British Machine Vision Conference 2015, 2015
In this paper we propose a supervised initialization scheme for cascaded face alignment based on explicit head pose estimation. We first investigate the failure cases of most state of the art face alignment approaches and observe that these failures often share one common global property, i.e. the head pose variation is usually large. Inspired by this,
