Abstract A health index is described which expresses health numerically between 0 and 1. Each patient scores 0, 1/2, or 1 for each of ten " questions " relating to well-being, the index being the total score divided by 10. Twenty-seven patients were assessed by more than one observer, and good agreement between scores was obtained.

Developing Multiattribute Health Indexes
Medical Care, 1984This article reviews the procedures for developing a multiattribute health index for use in population health studies and program evaluations. The development of such indexes involves two steps: 1) the creation of a multiattribute health state classification system; and 2) the mapping of the system into a single metric scale.
