Medical Clinics of North America, 1989
Evidence implicating obesity as a risk-factor disease is critically reviewed. Possible reasons for the many conflicting findings are addressed. The classification of obesity, based upon the site of body fat distribution, and possible biologic mechanisms associating regional adiposity with morbidity, are discussed.

To the Editor.— The article by Robert M. Veatch, PhD (243:50, 1980), provides a useful conceptual framework for determining the relative responsibilities of the individual, the physician, and society at large in dealing with voluntary risks to health. Social theories are created to explain human behavior that is, to a great extent, amorphous. Theories

Exposure of humans to contaminated sites may result in many types of health damage ranging from relatively innocent symptoms such as skin eruption or nausea, on up to cancer or even death. Human health protection is considered as a major protection target, both by decision-makers as well as by the general public.

This is an outline of the structure and limitations of existing health risk appraisal tools (HRA). A general model is discussed, where average populations risk data are modified in a risk computation algorithm. This process requires information on risk relevant characteristics of the individual and rules or assumptions where sufficient data do not ...

Environmental Health Risks and Tradable Health Risk Permits
Environmental and Resource Economics, 1999Health risk permits are suggested as an instrument for the systematic management of all health-relevant pollutants. These permits are denominated in statistical deaths due to pollution and have to be acquired by firms which emit pollutants inimical to health.

Childhood obesity is multi-factorial in etiology. Several factors contribute to the etiology of childhood obesity, and childhood obesity is itself associated with significant morbidity. This article focuses on the health risks of childhood obesity and on the prenatal and childhood influences that contribute to the genesis of childhood obesity.

Contact Dermatitis, 1980
Isocyanates represents an important occupational health problem. Severe toxic reactions and sensitization may occur. The main problem is the respiratory effects, but dermatological problems may occur. Correct diagnosis depends on a detailed occupational history. Effective preventive measures in the working environment are important.

It is somewhat of a truism to say that without exposure no toxic chemical can cause adverse health effects. Over four hundred years ago, Paracelsus(l) said words to the effect that “dosage alone determines toxicity.” Thus, no matter how toxic a chemical may be, its potential risk to humans (or to the environment) is controlled by potential exposure ...

Health risk communication using comparative risk analyses
Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology, 2004The ability to communicate effectively the degree or magnitude of public exposures or health risks is essential for risk assessors and risk managers. Various guidelines exist for communicating environmental and public health risks, including recommended approaches for putting risk data into proper context.

Health risks and the health care professional
Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy, 2000Health care professionals are one of a large group of individuals who are exposed to significant risks by virtue of their occupation, such as the police, mountain rescuers, fire-service. The types of risk to which health care professionals are exposed are numerous, many of which remain largely unrecognised by the public and may even be underestimated ...
