Critical orientations for humanising health sciences education in South Africa

open access: yesMedical Humanities, 2018
In this article, the authors make a case for the ’humanisation' and ’decolonisation' of health sciences curricula in South Africa, using integration as a guiding framework.

ERBIN limits epithelial cell plasticity via suppression of TGF‐β signaling

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In breast and lung cancer patients, low ERBIN expression correlates with poor clinical outcomes. Here, we show that ERBIN inhibits TGF‐β‐induced epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in NMuMG breast and A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell lines. ERBIN suppresses TGF‐β/SMAD signaling and reduces TGF‐β‐induced ERK phosphorylation.

Thermostable neutral metalloprotease from Geobacillus sp. EA1 does not share thermolysin's preference for substrates with leucine at the P1′ position

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Knowing how proteases recognise preferred substrates facilitates matching proteases to applications. The S1′ pocket of protease EA1 directs cleavage to the N‐terminal side of hydrophobic residues, particularly leucine. The S1′ pocket of thermolysin differs from EA's at only one position (leucine in place of phenylalanine), which decreases cleavage ...

Redox‐dependent binding and conformational equilibria govern the fluorescence decay of NAD(P)H in living cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this work, we reveal how different enzyme binding configurations influence the fluorescence decay of NAD(P)H in live cells using time‐resolved anisotropy imaging and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). Mathematical modelling shows that the redox states of the NAD and NADP pools govern these configurations, shaping their fluorescence ...

Compartment-specific antibody correlates of protection to SARS-CoV-2 Omicron in macaques

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Antibodies represent a primary mediator of protection against respiratory viruses. Serum neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) are often considered a primary correlate of protection.

Peer Review in Health Sciences. [PDF]

open access: yesPostgraduate Medical Journal, 2000
Peer Review in Health Sciences. Edited by Fiona Godlee and Tom Jefferson. (Pp 269; £27.00.) BMJ Publishing Group, 1999. ISBN0-7279-1181-3. Why devote space in the PMJ to this topic? Because, although it is a topic to which most of us have probably given little consideration, it is one we should be concerned about and, as one of the contributors puts ...

Exploring lipid diversity and minimalism to define membrane requirements for synthetic cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Designing the lipid membrane of synthetic cells is a complex task, in which its various roles (among them solute transport, membrane protein support, and self‐replication) should all be integrated. In this review, we report the latest top‐down and bottom‐up advances and discuss compatibility and complexity issues of current engineering approaches ...

IPSILATERAL INGUINAL HERNIA IN TODDLERS: IS IT NECESSARY TO EXPLORE OTHER SIDE?

open access: yesJournal of Research in Medical Sciences, 2001
Introduction: Inguinal hernia is one of the most common disease in pediatric surgery. Operation is the only definite treatment for it, yet. Bilateral inguinal exploration is recommended by some authors due to high incidence of bilateral inguinal hernia ...
