Effects of Hearing Impairment and Hearing Aid Amplification on Listening Effort: A Systematic Review

open access: yesEar and Hearing, 2017
Objectives: To undertake a systematic review of available evidence on the effect of hearing impairment and hearing aid amplification on listening effort. Two research questions were addressed: Q1) does hearing impairment affect listening effort?

Ageism in Rheumatology: the Healthcare Professional's Perspective

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective Ageism (age‐based stereotypes, prejudice, or discrimination) is prevalent and linked to prolonged disability and reduced lifespan in older adults. Little is known about ageism within rheumatology. This study explores the healthcare professional's (HCP) perception of the care of older adults and how ageist attitudes or perspectives may impact ...

Dynamic Processing Neural Network Architecture For Hearing Loss Compensation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
This paper proposes neural networks for compensating sensorineural hearing loss. The aim of the hearing loss compensation task is to transform a speech signal to increase speech intelligibility after further processing by a person with a hearing impairment, which is modeled by a hearing loss model.

Moderators and mediators of pain and function outcomes in a new service delivery model for management of knee osteoarthritis in primary care (PARTNER): Secondary exploratory analysis of a randomized controlled trial

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective Explore moderators and mediators influenced changes in pain and function in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA) receiving a new model of primary care service delivery (PARTNER), at 12 months (ACTRN12617001595303). Methods Secondary analyses of a cluster randomized controlled trial comparing PARTNER to usual general practitioner‐delivered ...

What Keeps Older Adults With Hearing Impairment From Adopting Hearing Aids?

open access: yesTrends in Hearing, 2018
The aim of this study was to compare elderly individuals who are hearing impaired but inexperienced in using hearing aids (hearing aid non-users; HA-NU) with their aided counterparts (hearing aid users; HA-U) across various auditory and non-auditory ...

Bioresorbable and Wireless Rechargeable Implanted Na‐ion Battery for Temporary Medical Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An all‐solid‐state bioresorbable Na‐ion battery is developed, composed entirely of bio‐eliminable materials. In vivo and ex vivo tests confirmed harmless disintegration of this implanted battery. Lifetime of the implanted battery can be precisely controlled by adjusting the dissolvable encapsulation layer's thickness.

Generation of a human induced pluripotent stem cell line (CPGHi001-A) from a hearing loss patient with the TMC1 p.M418K mutation

open access: yesStem Cell Research, 2020
By using a nonintegrating plasmid delivery system, we generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from the urine cells of a male patient from the family carrying the TMC1 p.M418K mutation. This mutation is homologous to that in Beethoven mice, which

Non-uniform FIR Digital Filter Bank for Hearing Aid Application Using Frequency Response Masking Technique: A Review [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Hearing aid is an electroacoustic device used to selectively amplify the audio sounds with an aim to make speech more intelligible for a hearing impaired person. Filter bank is one of the important parts of digital hearing aid where the sub band gains of each filter can be tuned to compensate an individuals unique hearing loss pattern.

Hearing Impairment Among Noise-Exposed Workers - United States, 2003-2012.

open access: yesMMWR. Morbidity and mortality weekly report, 2016
Hearing loss is the third most common chronic physical condition in the United States, and is more prevalent than diabetes or cancer (1). Occupational hearing loss, primarily caused by high noise exposure, is the most common U.S. work-related illness (2).
