Efficacy and Safety of Intratympanic Botulinum Toxin Injection on Middle Ear Myoclonic Tinnitus

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Intratympanic Botulinum toxin (IT‐BTX) injection appears to be an effective and safe treatment for MEMT, significantly reducing tinnitus‐related symptoms without complications. In a retrospective study of 57 patients, THI scores and VAS measures for loudness, awareness, annoyance, and life impact improved significantly over 6 months.

Impact of Acute Versus Chronic Unilateral Hearing Loss on Head Movement in a Novel Binaural Task

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Individuals with single‐sided deafness (SSD) may develop adaptive listening strategies with head movement patterns to optimize monaural localization and speech‐in‐noise understanding. Granular understanding of adaptive behaviors may better inform rehabilitation for SSD.

Temporal processing in listeners with unilateral hearing loss [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Temporal processing is examined for sounds delivered to the intact ear of individuals with unilateral hearing, and delivered to one ear of individuals with normal, bilateral hearing.

Improving health-related quality of life in single-sided deafness: a systematic review and meta-analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Unilateral severe-to-profound hearing loss, or single-sided deafness (SSD), impairs listening abilities supported by the use of two ears, including speech perception in background noise and sound localisation.

One-Year Results for Patients with Unilateral Hearing Loss and Accompanying Severe Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Treated with a Cochlear Implant

open access: yesAudiology and Neurotology, 2018
Objective: To show that patients with unilateral hearing loss (UHL), with one ear fulfilling cochlear implant (CI) indication criteria, and an additional severe tinnitus handicap can be treated effectively with a CI.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Using Dynamic Posturography: Functional Stability and Fall Risk Outcomes From a Randomized Trial

open access: yesOtolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective To compare computerized vestibular retraining therapy (CVRT) to a home exercise program (HEP) for the treatment of unilateral vestibular deficits. Study Design Randomized, unblinded, interventional study with single crossover. Setting This study was performed in a tertiary neurotology clinic.

Bilateral Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct: Auditory, Genetic and Radiological Characterization, and Benefits of Cochlear Implants

open access: yesOtolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective The study aimed to describe the auditory phenotype of patients with bilateral enlarged vestibular aqueduct, including benefits of cochlear implantation, and to look for genotype‐phenotype correlation. Study Design Retrospective single‐center study. Setting Tertiary adult reference center.

Impact of Single-Side Deafness on Listening Effort: A Prospective Comparative Study. [PDF]

open access: yesLaryngoscope Investig Otolaryngol
This article mainly studies the differences in selective attention and working memory during listening between adult patients with single‐side deafness and normal people, which is illustrated through the analysis of subjective behavioral data and objective pupillometry data.

Predicting speech perception outcomes following cochlear implantation in adults with unilateral deafness or highly asymmetric hearing loss [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Unilateral deafness and highly-asymmetric hearing loss can impair listening abilities in everyday situations, create substantial audiological handicap, and reduce overall quality of life.
