Antioxidant Carbon Dot of Selenomethionine Alleviates Oxidative Stress in Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A selenomethionine‐derived carbon dot (Se‐Met‐CD) serves as a potent nano‐antioxidant, efficiently scavenging reactive oxygen species, protecting nucleus pulposus cells from oxidative damage, restoring extracellular matrix homeostasis, and significantly mitigating intervertebral disc degeneration in vivo, which demonstrates great promise as a nanozyme ...

Observations of foetal heart veins draining directly into the left and right atria

open access: yesFolia Morphologica, 2019
Evaluation of semiserial sections of 14 normal hearts from human foetuses of gestational age 25-33 weeks showed that all of these hearts contained thin veins draining directly into the atria (maximum, 10 veins per heart). Of the 75 veins in these 14 hearts, 55 emptied into the right atrium and 20 into the left atrium.

Ultra‐Sensitive and Linear Flexible Pressure Sensors with Tri‐Scale Graded Microstructures for Advanced Health Monitoring and Robotic Perception

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A flexible piezoresistive sensor with a 3D tri‐scale graded microstructure is proposed, overcoming the trade‐off between sensitivity and linearity. The device achieves ultra‐high sensitivity (138.6 kPa−1), a broad linear range (400 kPa, R2 = 0.99), and exceptional stability (24 000 repeated loading cycles), enabling precise detection of physiological ...

Heart Atria Granularity Effects of Changes in Water-Electrolyte Balance

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1979
SummaryAtrial granularity was measured using a new morphometric method in rats subjected to procedures known to alter water-electrolyte balance. It was found that water deprivation and sodium deficiency lead to atrial hypergranulation, whereas, the combined administration of desoxycorticosterone (2.5 mg/100 g body wt/day) and 2% NaCl in the drinking ...

Modelling Effect of Heart Failure on the Electrical Activity of Sheep Atria

open access: yesComputing in Cardiology Conference (CinC), 2018
Heart failure (HF) is associated with cardiac arrhythmias, which impairs cardiac electromechanics that causes dysfunction of cardiac muscle contraction leading to increased risks of morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have revealed that HF causes alteration to the electrophysiological and structural properties of the atria.

Parametric Design of Continuum Robots Using Interlocking Ball Joints

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Herein, a parametric design methodology is introduced for producing a wide variety of modular ball joint‐based continuum robots. It is demonstrate by designing a magnetically actuated continuum robot for cardiac ablations. The methodology is released as an open‐source computer‐assisted design extension that automatically designs continuum robots based ...

Tissue‐Resident Myeloid and Histiocytic Cells in Health and Disease: Novel Emerging Concepts

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Although all myeloid cells are considered to derive from hematopoietic stem cells, the cells in each myeloid lineage are heterogeneous populations, and their distribution and functions vary, depending on underlying physiologic and pathologic processes, age, sex, and genetic and epigenetic signatures.
