The role of the atria in congenital heart disease
Cardiology Clinics, 2002The atria play an important role in adult congenital heart disease. Atrial function is often altered due to longstanding pressure or volume overload. Cardiac surgery inflicts lasting damage to the atria, which leads to loss of atrial compliance. Both the history of atrial overload and the atrial scarring form substrates for atrial tachycardias.

Neuronal control of heart rate in isolated mouse atria
American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, 2003A novel mouse isolated atrial preparation with intact postganglionic autonomic innervation was used to investigate the neuronal control of heart rate. To establish whether autonomic activation was likely to alter heart rate by modulating the hyperpolarization-activated current ( If), the L-type Ca2+current ( ICa,L), or the ACh-activated K+current ( IK ...

Isolation and characterization of glycosaminoglycans from atria of the human heart
International Journal of Biochemistry, 1981Abstract 1. 1. Five glycosaminoglycans were isolated from tryptic digest of atria of the human heart and were assayed by determining the carbohydrate content of materials. 2. 2. Separation of these 5 polymers was achieved by Dowex 1 × 2 column chromatography. 3. 3.

Electrocardiographic behavior of recipient and donor atria after human heart transplantation
The American Journal of Cardiology, 1969Abstract After human heart transplantation, separate donor and recipient P waves were seen in 7 of 10 patients, and P wave form was changed from the preoperative state. The recipients' P waves responded normally to various degrees of exercise and the Valsalva maneuver, whereas the donor complexes gave a response typical of denervation. The effects of

Specialized tissues and preferential conduction in the atria of the heart
The American Journal of Cardiology, 1971Abstract Many of the widely prevalent concepts in clinical electrocardiography are based on the premise that the spread of electrical activity in the atria is radial, not following special pathways. This review questions that premise on the grounds of recent electrophysiologic, biochemical and anatomic studies that are more logically interpreted as ...

Extraneuronal accumulation of isoproterenol in atria and ventricle of perfused rat heart
Life Sciences, 1988Extraneuronal accumulation of isoproterenol in atria and ventricle of perfused rat heart was investigated. Rat hearts were perfused with various concentrations of 3H-isoproterenol for 30 min in the absence and the presence of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor (tropolone).

Separation of the Natural Atria in Experimental Implantation of Total Artificial Heart
Artificial Organs, 1995Abstract: Atrial connections in a single‐unit total artificial heart (TAH) may be difficult to make because of the rigidity of the device and the fixed position of the atrial inlets. We developed a technique to separate the natural atrial borders in an experimental implantation of a unitary TAH.

Atrial fibrillation in heart failure: Current treatment of patients with remodeled atria
Current Heart Failure Reports, 2008Atrial fibrillation (AF) and chronic heart failure (CHF) can be caused by each other, and therefore constitute a vicious circle. The prevalence of both conditions is about 1% in industrialized countries and increases with age. Although mortality is increased in heart failure, the additional prognostic relevance of AF in these patients is less clear. AF

Effects of osthole on isolated guinea pig heart atria.
Zhongguo yao li xue bao = Acta pharmacologica Sinica, 1995To study the effects of osthole (Ost) on the isolated guinea pig atria and the relationship between Ost effect and Ca2+.Contractions of left atria were induced by electric stimulations. The contractile amplitude of left atria pre- and post-treated with Ost was measured according to the cumulative concentration method, the drug being added at 15 min ...

[Gene expression specific for heart atria and ventricles].
Genetika, 1999The data on the chamber-specific expression of cardiac genes in the animal and human heart are reviewed. The positional specification of atrial and ventricular gene expression observed in adults is initiated early during embryogenesis. The existence of a cascade of genes is assumed, beginning with genes whose products form an anterior-posterior ...
