Immunolocalization of ornithine decarboxylase in rat heart atria
Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, 1989Mammalian atrial myocytes secrete a potent natriuretic and diuretic factor, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), in response to volume expansion or elevations of right atrial pressure. ANP is synthesized in the atrial atrial myocytes and stored in cytoplasmic secretory granules.

Characterization of natriuretic peptide production by adult heart atria
American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, 1999The cardiac polypeptide hormones atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are synthesized and costored by atrial cardiocytes and share receptors and many biologic properties. Although some aspects of their synthesis and release are specific for each peptide, it is not clear whether they share intracellular sorting and ...

A 72-year-old woman was admitted to our department for further investigation of a heart defect noted in transthoracic echocardiography performed in a district hospital. The patient complained of palpitations and moderately limited physical activity. On ECG, atrial fibrillation was recorded with a well-controlled ventricular rate.

Embolization from the Atria in Arteriosclerotic Heart Disease
JAMA, 1961One thousand autopsied cases were studied to determine the incidence of embolism from the atria in arteriosclerotic heart disease. In this study, it was found that 1 case of embolization occurred in a total of 52 patients with atrial fibrillation (2%), and 2 cases of embolization occurred in a total of 243 cases who were nonfibrillators (0.8%).

Revisiting heart activation-conduction physiology, part I: atria
Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology, 2014This discussion paper re-examines the conduction-activation of the atria, based on observations, with respect to the complexity of the heart as an organ with a brain, and its evolution from a peristaltic tube. The atria do not require a specialized conduction system because they use the subendocardial layer to produce centripetal transmural activation ...

Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma in the atria of the heart
Cardiovascular Pathology, 2001A rare case of primary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the heart is described. The large space-occupying tumor in the atrial wall and its associated significant pericardial effusion caused marked impairment of cardiovascular function. The diagnosis was made via intravenous biopsy.
