Robust Heart Sound Analysis With MFCC and Light Weight Convolutional Neural Network

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology
Objective: Heart sound analysis is essential for cardiovascular disorder classification. Traditional auscultation and rule-based methods require manual feature engineering and clinical expertise.

Mitral regurgitation and decompensated heart failure in a young pregnant pony mare: An aetiological challenge

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary A 4‐year‐old, 6‐month pregnant, Welsh pony mare presented with severe acute clinical signs including depression, anorexia, pale mucous membranes, tachycardia with a grade 4/6 holosystolic murmur and moderate expiratory dyspnoea with diffuse wheezes. Hamman's crunch—A pathognomonic sign of pneumomediastinum

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Pneumomediastinum, particularly spontaneous pneumomediastinum, is uncommon and presents a diagnostic challenge. In human medicine, auscultation of Hamman's crunch, a crepitant, crunching noise, audible over the cardiac region in synchrony with the heartbeat, is considered pathognomonic for pneumomediastinum.

Digital devices for teaching cardiac auscultation - a randomized pilot study

open access: yesMedical Education Online, 2018
Background: Competent cardiac auscultation is a declining skill. Digital stethoscopes and hand-held echocardiography (HHE) are modern devices which may improve the accuracy of heart murmur recognition and diagnosis.

Acute and sudden death secondary to cardiac tamponade during anaesthetic recovery in a 21‐year‐old draught mule

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary This case report is of educational value and contributes to the literature because it describes a unique death after anaesthesia due to cardiac tamponade from a rare cardiac neoplasm. In trying to diagnose the origin of chronic sinusitis, a geriatric mule mare was anaesthetised and during recovery, died acutely.

Field‐applicable low‐intensity exercise induces bronchodilation in horses with severe asthma

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Airway dysfunction in severe equine asthma (SEA) often results in early retirement or euthanasia of affected horses. Exercise‐induced bronchodilation occurs in horses with SEA after intense treadmill exercise, but the effects of a lighter, field‐applicable, training regimen remain largely unexplored.
