Complete heart block (CHB) occurs when atrial impulses are not conducted to the ventricles. It occurs in association with many conditions, including acute myocardial infarction. In the setting of acute myocardial infarction (MI), certain characteristic conduction disturbances tend to precede development of CHB.

Heart Block (Atrioventricular Block)
1979This was described in Part 10. The prolonged PR interval in first degree heart block is usually caused by a delay in conduction of the atrial impulse through the atrioventricular (AV) node. In the more advanced degrees of heart block the disease may be at the AV node or lower down the conducting system in the His bundle or the bundle branches.
