A machine‐learning algorithm to grade heart murmurs and stage preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease in dogs

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine
Background The presence and intensity of heart murmurs are sensitive indicators of several cardiac diseases in dogs, particularly myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), but accurate interpretation requires substantial clinical expertise.

Heartbeat murmurs detection in phonocardiogram recordings via transfer learning

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal, 2022
Heart murmurs are abnormal heartbeat patterns that could be indicative of a serious heart condition, which can only be detected by trained specialists with the use of a stethoscope.

Erving Goffman at 100: A Chameleon Seen as a Rorschach Test within a Kaleidoscope

open access: yesSymbolic Interaction, EarlyView.
The 100th anniversary of Erving Goffman's birth was in 2022. Drawing on his work, the Goffman archives, the secondary literature, and personal experiences with him and those in his university of Chicago cohort, I reflect on some implications of his work and life, and the inseparable issues of understanding society.

Spontaneous haemoperitoneum secondary to mast cell neoplasia and presumed splenic abscess rupture in a cat

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract A geriatric feline was presented to a university teaching hospital for lethargy and inappetence. The patient was subsequently diagnosed with spontaneous haemoperitoneum secondary to rupture of a splenic mass and was taken to surgery for splenectomy following appropriate stabilisation measures.

Treatment of focal junctional tachycardia using ivabradine in a dog

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract A 10‐year‐old labrador retriever was referred as an emergency due to ascites and lethargy. Physical examination revealed a regular tachycardia at 160 beats per minute with a Grade 3/6, left apical systolic heart murmur. The dog was diagnosed with severe myxomatous mitral valve disease with biventricular congestive heart failure (mild pulmonary

Murmur Detection Using Parallel Recurrent & Convolutional Neural Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
In this article, we propose a novel technique for classification of the Murmurs in heart sound. We introduce a novel deep neural network architecture using parallel combination of the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) & Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to learn visual and time-dependent characteristics

Resolution of third‐degree atrioventricular block after antibiotic therapy in a dog (Canis lupus familiaris) with urinary tract infection

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract A 15‐year‐old, spayed, female Boxer dog presented to an emergency facility for collapsing episodes. Third‐degree atrioventricular block that was non‐responsive to atropine was diagnosed on electrocardiography. Initial diagnostics revealed a concurrent urinary tract infection and renal azotaemia.
