Valvular heart disease, infected valves and prosthetic heart valves

The American Journal of Cardiology, 1990
The major causes of systemic embolism from valvular heart disease (mitral, aortic and mitral valve prolapse), prosthetic valves (both mechanical and tissue valves) and infected valves (endocarditis) are reviewed from the standpoint of their incidence and complications.

Heart Valve Disease

2005
The function of the heart is to circulate blood in closed circuit to the lungs, where blood is oxygenated, and out to the body, where oxygen provides fuel for cellular metabolism. To accomplish this task, blood is pumped by the right heart system from the body to the lungs.

Heart Valve Disease

2009
This chapter was designed to provide the reader with a brief overview of the current surgical treatment options for heart valve disease. Major topics of discussion are: (1) development of prosthetic valve replacements; (2) current issues with valve replacement; (3) major valvular diseases that affect humans in the Western world; and (4) recent advances

Heart Valve Diseases in Pregnancy

2019
Various congenital or acquired valvular heart diseases (VHD) may be present in pregnant women, and may significantly increase the maternal and fetal risk associated with pregnancy. Pregnancy is associated with significant haemodynamic changes that may aggravate VHD, precipitate or exacerbate symptoms, and increase the risk of thrombo-embolic events ...

Valve Replacement in Rheumatic Heart Disease

Chest, 1973
In a consecutive series of 50 patients undergoing single and multiple cardiac valve replacement operations for rheumatic heart disease at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, there were only two in-hospital deaths and four late deaths. Rehabilitation was good to excellent in 82 percent of patients, with follow-up studies from 6 to 18 months.

Heart valve disease: mixed valve disease, multiple valve disease, and others

2016
Abstract Multiple and mixed heart valve disease are highly prevalent. Echocardiography is the cornerstone technique for imaging these patients. As with patients with single-valve stenosis or regurgitation, one should aim to evaluate the aetiology, the mechanism(s) of dysfunction, as well as the consequences and the possibility of repair.

Heart valve disease (aortic valve disease): aortic stenosis

2016
Abstract Echocardiography has become the gold standard for the assessment of patients with aortic stenosis (AS). It allows morphological assessment of the aortic valve and provides information on the aetiology of the disease. The quantification of AS includes primarily the measurement of transaortic jet velocities and gradients as well ...

Heart valve disease (aortic valve disease): aortic regurgitation

2016
Abstract Echocardiography is the cornerstone examination for the assessment of aortic regurgitation (AR): it provides reliable evaluation of the aortic valve and allows diagnosis and identification of the mechanism of regurgitation. The specific aetiology of the disease can be identified in the majority of cases.

Heart valve disease (mitral valve disease): mitral stenosis

2016
Abstract The most common cause of mitral stenosis (MS) is rheumatic fever followed by degenerative MS. Echocardiography is the key method to diagnose and evaluate MS. Echocardiographic findings are closely related to aetiology. In rheumatic disease echocardiography shows thickening of leaflet tips with restricted opening caused by ...
