Heart valve disease: a journey of discovery
Heart, 2022In the centenary year of the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS), this review article outlines the influence of UK cardiologists and surgeons on the field of heart valve disease, many of whom can rightly claim ‘world firsts’ in the field. From the description of endocarditis as we know it today at the turn of the 20th century, to the first mitral ...

Heart Valve Diseases in Pregnancy
2019Various congenital or acquired valvular heart diseases (VHD) may be present in pregnant women, and may significantly increase the maternal and fetal risk associated with pregnancy. Pregnancy is associated with significant haemodynamic changes that may aggravate VHD, precipitate or exacerbate symptoms, and increase the risk of thrombo-embolic events ...

The function of the heart is to circulate blood in closed circuit to the lungs, where blood is oxygenated, and out to the body, where oxygen provides fuel for cellular metabolism. To accomplish this task, blood is pumped by the right heart system from the body to the lungs.

Echocardiography remains the gold standard and first level choice for the study of heart valve diseases because of its availability, high temporal resolution for the study of valvular flows, limited costs and possibility to perform the examination in any condition. Nevertheless CMR has specific advantages to be considered in specific settings.

Valve Replacement in Rheumatic Heart Disease
Chest, 1973In a consecutive series of 50 patients undergoing single and multiple cardiac valve replacement operations for rheumatic heart disease at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, there were only two in-hospital deaths and four late deaths. Rehabilitation was good to excellent in 82 percent of patients, with follow-up studies from 6 to 18 months.

Tricuspid valve diseases: Interventions on the forgotten heart valve
Journal of Cardiac Surgery, 2020Over the past few decades, the tricuspid valve (TV) interventions have been relatively lower compared to other cardiac valvular disease in terms of pathophysiology and management, especially regarding surgical intervention and therapy. However, recent crucial advances in assessment and management of the TV disease have resulted in a renewed interest in

The modern epidemiology of heart valve disease
Heart, 2015### Learning objectives In this review, we will discuss the current knowledge of heart valve disease (HVD) epidemiology, how it has changed over time and possible future trends. There are large differences in HVD epidemiology between high-income and low-income countries and across different forms of HVD.

Rheumatic valve disease remains prevalent in developing countries, but over the last 50 years there has been a decline in the incidence of rheumatic valve disease and an increase in the prevalence of degenerative valve pathology in northern Europe and North America. In all forms of valve disease, the most appropriate initial diagnostic investigation is
