From November 1978 to June 1986, 743 patients received 828 ST. JUDE MEDICAL® valves (SJM) at the University Clinics of Basel, Berne, and Lausanne, Switzerland. There were 445 men and 298 women, with a mean age of 57 years (range 1–83 years), who were followed for a mean of 2.6 years (22,768 patient-months).

Right-sided infective endocarditis (IE) represents 5-10% of IE. It may occur in patients with electronic intracardiac device, central venous catheter or congenital heart disease, but the most frequent situation is intravenous drug use. Prosthetic valve IE is the most severe form of IE.
