The fine structure of the heart valves in the chicken. I. Mitral valve
American Journal of Anatomy, 1969AbstractThe fine structure of the mitral valve in the chicken heart is described. The chicken has no distinct muscular component within the mitral valve; on the other hand, the tricuspid valve is a muscular fold. The mitral valve is a thin, membranous, fibrous structure and is composed of three layers: (a) an auricular and ventricular endothelial layer,

Heart valve disease (mitral valve disease): mitral regurgitation
2016Mitral regurgitation (MR) is increasingly prevalent in Europe. Echocardiography has a key role in the diagnosis and management of patients with MR. Each echocardiographic study in patients with MR should aim to characterize mitral valve morphology, identify the mechanism of valve dysfunction, quantify the severity of MR, and give hints regarding the ...

A mitral valve prosthesis and a study of thrombosis on heart valves in dogs
Journal of Surgical Research, 1962Summary o 1. A prosthesis for the atrioventricular heart valves has been designed which tends to imitate the natural mitral valve. The valve is cylindric in shape and is made of smooth polyurethane. The fixation ring is flexible, with Dacron mesh and polyurethane sponge provided for fixation. The sutures are shielded from the blood stream.

Antithrombotic therapy in patients with mechanical and biological prosthetic heart valves.
Chest, 20011. Permanent therapy with oral anticoagulants offers the most consistent protection in patients with mechanical heart valves. 2. Antiplatelet agents alone do not consistently protect patients with mechanical prosthetic heart valves, including patients in

Mitral valve repair in the treatment of heart failure
Current Treatment Options in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2004Heart failure continues to be one of the leading causes of hospitalizations and mortality in the United States. Mitral valve regurgitation in patients with heart failure is most often a functional abnormality and as such represents a different disease entity from other more common causes of regurgitation.

Percutaneous Mitral Valve Interventions and Heart Failure
2017Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most frequent Valvular Heart Disease (VHD) and is an important cause of heart failure. MR can be caused by primary valve abnormality (Degenerative MR/Primary MR) or it can be secondary to cardiomyopathy (Functional MR/Secondary MR). Medical management alleviates symptoms but does not alter the progression of the disease.

Mitral valve replacement in a heart transplant recipient with Iatrogenic mitral regurgitation
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1996A 65-year-old cardiac transplant recipient suffered rupture of the mitral valve apparatus during endomyocardial biopsy of the left ventricle. Severe mitral regurgitation resulted, and because of heart failure with progressive clinical deterioration the patient was finally subjected to mitral valve replacement.

The Fluid Dynamics of Heart Valves: Experimental, Theoretical, and Computational Methods
, 1982The function of the valves on the left side of the heart is reviewed in Figure I, which shows schematically the pressures, flows, and valve positions of the mitral (inflow) and aortic (outflow) valves of the left ventricle.
