Towards real-time cardiovascular magnetic resonance-guided transarterial aortic valve implantation: In vitro evaluation and modification of existing devices

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, 2010
Background Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered an attractive alternative for guiding transarterial aortic valve implantation (TAVI) featuring unlimited scan plane orientation and unsurpassed soft-tissue contrast with simultaneous device

Mono‐ and Bivalent Poly(iso‐butylene)‐Alanines for Drug‐Delivery of Nimodipine and Triamcinolone Acetonide

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
Mono‐ and bivalent‐, alanine‐modified poly‐iso‐butylenes, folding into beta‐sheets, were prepared by living carbocationic polymerization and subsequent endgroup modification. These PIB‐conjugates are useful as solid polymers for the drug release of triamcinolone and nimodipine. ABSTRACT Poly‐iso‐butylene (PIB) is a well known biocompatible polymer with

Even a single positive blood culture may matter – A case of prosthetic valve infective endocarditis caused by Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii

open access: yesIDCases
Corynebacterium is a skin commensal bacterium that can contaminate blood cultures. It is however also a rare cause of infective endocarditis (IE). Here we report a case of Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii aortic prosthesis IE in a 76-year-old man where ...

Characteristics, properties and limitations of per‐ or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and fluoropolymers

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
An overview and categorization of man‐made per‐ or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) including low‐molar‐mass and high‐molar‐mass fluorochemicals, and their international regulations is presented. Though certain PFASs are toxic, bioaccumulative and cross the human cellular membranes, others, such as fluoropolymers, are safe, reliable and involved in ...

Weathering the storms of climate change: Preparing persons with disabilities and the physiatrists who provide their care for extreme hurricanes

open access: yesPM&R, EarlyView.
Abstract Climate‐driven disasters have disproportionate and often devastating consequences on individuals with disabilities. Warming ocean and air temperatures are fueling more extreme tropical cyclones, further endangering those living in at‐risk regions.

Non infective severe aortic paravalvular leakage 7 years after surgery: the role of suture technique

open access: yesJournal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, 2011
We report a case of redo aortic prosthesis replacement for a severe paravalvular leak (PVL) in a man operated with continuous suture technique 7 years earlier. The severe aortic regurgitation was due to the rupture of the suture.

Guided Tissue Regeneration in Heart Valve Replacement: From Preclinical Research to First-in-Human Trials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Heart valve tissue-guided regeneration aims to offer a functional and viable alternative to current prosthetic replacements. Not requiring previous cell seeding and conditioning in bioreactors, such exceptional tissue engineering approach is a very ...

Evidence Suggests Prophylactic Antibiotics May Be Unnecessary in Anorectal Surgery—A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Current evidence does not support the routine use of prophylactic antibiotics in uncomplicated anorectal procedures. However, the certainty of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, methodological heterogeneity, and limited number of available studies. Large‐scale randomized trials are required to strengthen this evidence base.

Mitral regurgitation in patients with severe aortic stenosis: Diagnosis and management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Severe aortic stenosis (AS) and mitral regurgitation (MR) frequently coexist. Although some observational studies have reported that moderate or severe MR is associated with higher mortality, the optimal management of such patients is still unclear ...
