Validation of Aortic Blood Flow Simulations During Extracorporeal Circulation Using Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
This is the first study assessing in vivo blood flow profiles during extracorporeal circulation (ECC) scenarios. Magnetic resonance imaging data served for the calibration of computational fluid dynamics algorithms, enabling accurate replication of the hemodynamic conditions.

Comparison of Intraoperative Doppler Flow Measurements and Algorithmic Flow Estimations in Patients Undergoing Durable Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Direct intraoperative HeartMate 3 LVAD flow measurements using an ultrasonic probe revealed consistently higher values by approximately 0.5 L/min compared to device‐estimated flows. This discrepancy remained stable across pump speed settings, highlighting the importance of distinguishing measured from estimated flow in HeartMate 3 patients.

Dysfunction of an On-X Heart Valve by Pannus

open access: yes, 2016
A 68-year-old woman with a history of previous double-valve replacement with On-X mechanical heart valves presented with clinical, echocardiographic and cardiac catheterization signs of obstruction of the On-X tricuspid heart valve prosthesis.

Identification of Autologous Tissue Sources and Optimization of a Treatment Method for Intraoperative Manufacturing of Heart Valve Constructs

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
The use of autologous connective tissue, such as pericardium or peritoneum, combined with controlled tissue treatment, has the potential to result in a more durable heart valve prosthesis than current commercial prostheses. ABSTRACT Introduction Valvular heart disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Current biological and mechanical

Mechanical heart valve prosthesis and warfarin - Treatment quality and prognosis.

open access: yes, 2014
Every year about 2500 patients in Sweden undergo surgery due to heart valve disease. A mechanical heart valve prosthesis causes risk of thromboembolic stroke or thrombus formation in the valve while anticoagulant treatment increases the risk of bleeding.

A Farewell to Arms… Manufacturing: Learning From a Landmine Producer Who Became a Deminer

open access: yesBusiness Ethics, the Environment &Responsibility, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Certain industries—labeled “dirty,” “sinful,” “stigmatized,” or “controversial”—are under public scrutiny because of the ethical, social, and environmental concerns that they raise. Previous research has typically focused on the industry or organizational level of analysis, examining how companies in controversial industries can enhance their ...

IC043: Combined Mitral and Aortic Valve Replacement Using Improved Prostheses

open access: yes, 1974
Demonstration circa 1974 of Cooley-Cutter prostheses for mitral and aortic valves and surgical replacement of the mitral and aortic valves with the protheses. The low-profile prosthesis has a Pyrolite carbon poppet in a double-cage titanium frame.

Glomerular filtration rate and association to stroke, major bleeding, and death in patients with mechanical heart valve prosthesis.

open access: yes, 2015
The impact of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on adverse events in patients with mechanical heart valves (MHVs) is unknown. We analyzed the independent association of eGFR and thromboembolism (TE), major bleeding, and mortality in patients ...

A guide to the ecological limitations of phage therapy of bacterial biofilms: Is what's best for the phage best for the physician?

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Bacteriophages—viruses that kill bacteria—are promising weapons against bacterial biofilms: sessile communities notoriously resistant to antibiotics. Yet phages evolved not so much to eradicate bacteria as to obtain new bacteria to infect. That goal, however, may conflict with the physician's objective of complete bacterial clearance.
