Quantifying Subsurface Weak in‐Plane Magnetization of Mixed Phase BiFeO3 by Scanning Nitrogen Vacancy Magnetometry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We use scanning nitrogen vacancy magnetometry to directly image the weak in‐plane magnetic moments in mixed phase BiFeO3 at the nanoscale and quantify the local magnetic moments to be 18.8±2.0 μB/nm2 in the rhombohedral‐like phase and 1.5±0.6 μB/nm2 in the well‐known non‐magnetic tetragonal‐like phase.

Mechanoluminescent HOF Nanotransducers Enabled Sono‐Optogenetics in Parkinsonian Rats

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present a mechanoluminescent system utilizing porous hydrogen‐bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) as a toolkit for focused ultrasound‐triggered, non‐invasive light delivery to the deep brain in rats. This approach enables the specific activation of PV‐GPe neurons in dopamine‐depleted Parkinson's disease rat models, resulting in a comparable alleviation

Robustness of the relationship between the heartbeat counting task and measures of anxiety, depression, and alexithymia: A behavioural study and meta-analysis

open access: yes
Interoception - the process of receiving information from within the body - has been proposed as a factor in different psychological phenomena, including anxiety, alexithymia, and depression. A popular approach for investigating this potential relationship has been to combine the heartbeat counting task (HCT) with questionnaires that aim to measure ...

Interoception in insula subregions as a possible state marker for depression – an exploratory fMRI study investigating healthy, depressed and remitted participants

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2015
Background: Interoceptive awareness, the awareness of stimuli originating inside the body, plays an important role in human emotions and psychopathology. The insula is particularly involved in neural processes underlying iA.

Glissile Interphase Boundaries Enable Collective Phase Switching in Epitaxial Polar Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A triple point is identified in the phase diagram of low‐symmetry epitaxial BiFeO3 thin film along with an extended regime of phase competition associated with a flattened energy landscape. The electromechanical response is shown to be governed by correlated interphase‐boundary motion, including scale‐free avalanche dynamics characteristic of systems ...

Acute Exercise with and without Music Enhances Interoceptive Accuracy but Differentially Affects Emotion and Perceived Exertion

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Psychology Open
: Introduction: Interoceptive dysfunction represents a transdiagnostic feature in depression-anxiety comorbidity, yet acute interventions targeting this deficit remain understudied. Aim: This study explored the effects of music on interoceptive accuracy (

Microfabricated Anisotropic Myobundles for the Scalable Production of Cardiac Tissue Grafts

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Controlling the anisotropy of cardiac tissue remains an outstanding challenge in the field of cardiac tissue engineering. Here, we introduce an approach to generate anisotropic cardiac myobundles using cell‐adhesive, synthetic, electrospun fibers and stem cell‐derived cardiac fibroblasts.

Neural activity during interoceptive awareness and its associations with alexithymia – An fMRI study in major depressive disorder and non-psychiatric controls

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2015
Objective: Alexithymia relates to difficulties recognizing and describing emotions. It has been linked to subjectively increased interoceptive awareness (IA) and to psychiatric illnesses such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and somatization.

Powering Nanocrystal‐Based Heat Engines With Light‐Emitting Metasurfaces That Influence Their Temperature

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Metasurfaces and other structured photonic environments can dramatically modify the absorption and/or light emission of semiconductors. However, the consequences of these changes on the temperature of the system are not well understood. The authors address this problem for colloidal nanocrystals and leverage their findings to convert light into ...

Artery‐on‐Chip Demonstrates Mechanical and Functional Features of Healthy and Diseased Living Smooth Muscle Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This article details the development of an artery‐on‐chip platform for in vitro arterial disease modeling and therapeutic discovery. It describes the fabrication of a fibrin biomaterial scaffold seeded with iPSC‐derived smooth muscle and endothelial cells, mimicking native artery properties. Two genetic disease models showcase the platform's ability to
