Fundamental Efficiency Bounds for the Conversion of a Radiative Heat Engine’s Own Emission into Work

open access: yes, 2019
Undergraduate coursework familiarizes us with heat engines---but not like these. This study identifies an innovative type of radiative heat engine and derives its fundamental efficiency and power bounds.

Laser Metal Deposited Ti4822 Hollow Pipe: Experimental and Computational Modelling Study

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser metal deposition (LMD) of a crack‐free built Ti4822 alloys is challenging. This article reports outstanding characteristics of a hollow pipe that is built with LMD technology when a predicted, nontransformation substrate temperature of 800 °C is used.

Unlocking the Power of Quercetin‐Encapsulated Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles: A Multifunctional Approach to Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) are investigated for bone regeneration given their remarkable structural and functional properties. MBGNs are functionalized with Mn and Cu and incorporated with quercetin, a natural flavonoid exhibiting antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

Optimization of a Thermoacoustic Engine with a Complex Heat Transfer Exponent

open access: yesEntropy, 2003
: Heat transfer between a thermoacoustic engine and its surrounding heat reservoirs can be out of phase with oscillating working gas temperature. The paper presents a generalized heat transfer model using a complex heat transfer exponent.

Thermoelectric properties of an interacting quantum dot based heat engine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We study the thermoelectric properties and heat-to-work conversion performance of an interacting, multi-level quantum dot (QD) weakly coupled to electronic reservoirs. We focus on the sequential tunneling regime.

Electrospark‐Deposited AlCrFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy Coatings on Steel: Microstructure Evolution, Mechanical Properties, and Corrosion Response

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
AlCrFeCoNi high entropy alloy coating is applied on steel using electrospark deposition. The microstructure evolution and phase transformation of the as‐deposited and heat‐treated coatings is characterized and discussed. Reduced microhardness and yield strength are measured after heat treatment.

Micromechanical Characterization of 316L‐V4E Steel Transitions Produced by Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion with Dual‐Hopper Alternating Layer Strategy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work applies High‐Speed Nanoindentation to study multi‐material transitions in powder bed fusion–electron beam melting components. The aim is to assess the mechanical gradients and interfacial behavior between American iron and steel institute 316L stainless steel and V4E tool steel in additively manufactured structures.

A multipurpose information engine that can go beyond the Carnot limit

open access: yes, 2016
Motivated by the recent work by Mandal and Jarzynski on autonomous Maxwell demon information engine, we have extended their model by introducing two different heat baths. The system (demon) is coupled to a memory register (tape) and a work source.
