Poleward heat transport by the atmospheric heat engine
Nature, 2002The atmospheric heat transport on Earth from the Equator to the poles is largely carried out by the mid-latitude storms. However, there is no satisfactory theory to describe this fundamental feature of the Earth's climate. Previous studies have characterized the poleward heat transport as a diffusion by eddies of specified horizontal length and ...

A quantum-dot heat engine operating close to the thermodynamic efficiency limits
Nature Nanotechnology, 2017Cyclical heat engines are a paradigm of classical thermodynamics, but are impractical for miniaturization because they rely on moving parts. A more recent concept is particle-exchange (PE) heat engines, which uses energy filtering to control a thermally ...

A thermophotonic heat pump/heat engine
MRS Proceedings, 2009AbstractWe propose a solid state heat pump based on photon assisted heat transfer between two large-area light emitting diodes coupled by the electromagnetic field and enclosed in a semiconductor structure with a nearly homogeneous refractive index. Ideally the thermophotonic heat pump (THP) allows heat transfer and electricity generation at the Carnot

Heat Engines and the Caloric Theory of Heat [PDF]
This chapter will present an alternative route to the thermodynamics of simple fluids at a slightly higher mathematical level, allowing for a generalization of the subject of thermodynamics of uniform fluids. The most important difference to the previous development has to do with what we assume to know about the nature of heat.

Plasma heat pump and heat engine
Physics of Plasmas, 2010A model system where cold charged particles are locally confined in a volume VP within a warm plasma of volume V (VP⪡V) is studied. Charged particles mutually repel via a shielded repulsion which is like an effective pressure, i.e., electrostatic pressure PE. The law of thermodynamics involving PE and an equation of state for PE are obtained.

Colloidal heat engines: a review
Soft Matter, 2017Stochastic heat engines can be built using colloidal particles trapped using optical tweezers. Here we review recent experimental realizations of microscopic heat engines. We first revisit the theoretical framework of stochastic thermodynamics that allows to describe the fluctuating behavior of the energy fluxes that occur at mesoscopic scales, and ...

This brief thermodynamic analysis theoretically explores the potential of using a solid-state electrochemical heat engine (EHE) to continually harvest waste heat from available thermal energy from natural and man-made sources. These EHE systems are composed of a fuel cell hybrid (FCH) and an electrolyer hybrid (EH) which is composed of fuel cells ...
