Island precipitation enhancement and the diurnal cycle in radiative-convective equilibrium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
To understand why tropical islands are rainier than nearby ocean areas, we explore how a highly idealized island, which differs from the surrounding ocean only in heat capacity, might respond to the diurnal cycle and influence the tropical climate ...

Temperature‐Modulated Threshold Response in a Volatile Memristor: Toward a Biomimetic Polymodal Nociceptive System

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates an artificial polymodal nociceptor whose firing threshold is actively modulated by temperature. A volatile TiN/TiOx/ZnO/TiOx/ITO memristor shows interfacial ion–driven resistive switching and membrane‐potential‐like dynamics, enabling temperature‐dependent nociceptive behavior.

Strain‐Programmable Luminescent Adhesive Patch With Tartrazine‐Mediated Optical Skin Clearing for Photochemical Tissue Bonding

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We propose a suture‐complementary approach that integrates optical skin clearing with a strain‐programmable luminescent adhesive patch. Hyaluronic acid promotes transdermal delivery of tartrazine to improve optical clearing and stabilizes its interaction with a photosensitizer. Optical clearing increases the penetration depth of visible light into skin,

Analyses of Urban Pavement Surface Temperatures

open access: yesThe Baltic Journal of Road and Bridge Engineering, 2015
Heat islands are areas that have higher air temperatures than their surroundings. It has been proven that the use of certain types of pavement surface materials contributes to the occurrence of heat islands.

A normal metal tunnel-junction heat diode [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We propose a low-temperature thermal rectifier consisting of a chain of three tunnel-coupled normal metal electrodes. We show that a large heat rectification is achievable if the thermal symmetry of the structure is broken and the central island can ...

Artifact‐Minimizing Ultrathin Transparent Electrodes Fabricated via iCVD for In Vivo Optogenetic Stimulation and Neural Signal Monitoring of Primary Visual Cortex

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present ultrathin flexible transparent electrodes through iCVD‐enabled molecular control of 10 nm gold films on poly(dimethylaminomethylstyrene). In vivo validation demonstrated photoelectric artifact reduction vs. opaque electrodes and preservation of natural neural dynamics.

Spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and driving factors of heat island effect based on territorial perspective: A case study of Beibu Gulf urban agglomeration, China

open access: yesEcological Indicators
The heat island effect has far-reaching impacts on human settlements and natural ecosystems. Current research predominantly focuses on urban areas and overlooks the broader natural ecosystems beyond urban boundaries.

Reduction of ion thermal diffusivity inside a magnetic island in JT-60U Tokamak plasma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A peaked ion temperature profile is observed inside the magnetic island during mode locking after the back transition from H mode to L mode in JT-60U.

Shape‐Controlled Guanine Self‐Assemblies for Stable and Fast‐Ion Solid–Electrolyte Interphases in Sustainable Li Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The shape of guanine self‐assemblies is tuned by introducing alkyl (G8), fluoroalkyl (G8f), and oligoether (G8g) side chains into the G moiety. The scanning tunneling microscopy results and calculations show that the presence and type of the side chain strongly affect the G self‐assembly network.

Identification of Thermal Environment Networks in the Wanjiang Urban Agglomeration Based on MSPA and Circuit Theory

open access: yesLand
With the acceleration of urbanization, the high density and intensity of urban construction and expansion have led to an exacerbation of the urban heat island (UHI) effect, which, in turn, contributes to global climate warming and severely impacts urban ...
