Heat island effect for Nicosia, Cyprus
Advances in Building Energy Research, 2014Daily values of meteorological data from two stations, one rural and one urban, of Cyprus Meteorological Service for a very large period (1983–2010) have been analyzed in order to detect the existence of the heat island effect in Nicosia, Cyprus. This study examines the heat island effect by comparing the mean daily temperature of the two stations ...

Thermal Heat Island Effect in Bihar
2014Most of the time, the air and surface temperatures of cities are a few degrees higher than their surrounding areas. This temperature discrepancy is the result of an unexpected phenomenon known as the urban heat island (UHI) (UHI refers to a metropolitan area with a significant higher temperature in comparison to surrounding rural areas due to human ...

Effect of the Urban Heat Island on Aerosol pH
Environmental Science & Technology, 2017The urban heat island (UHI) is a widely observed phenomenon whereby urban environments have higher temperatures and different relative humidities than surrounding suburban and rural areas. Temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) strongly affect the partitioning of semivolatile species found in the atmosphere, such as nitric acid, ammonia, and water.

Urban heat island effect on Istanbul city.
1992SUMMARY In this work differences in the air temperature fields in and around Istanbul city during the hours near sunset and cloudless skies are analyzed. The influence of synoptic wind speed on the heat island phenomena was examined. The relative and absolute humidities in the Istanbul urban and non-urban areas was studied during this work.

Positive effects of vegetation: Urban heat island and green roofs
Environmental Pollution, 2011This paper attempts to evaluate the positive effects of vegetation with a multi-scale approach: an urban and a building scale. Monitoring the urban heat island in four areas of New York City, we have found an average of 2 °C difference of temperatures between the most and the least vegetated areas, ascribable to the substitution of vegetation with man ...

The urban heat island effect and city contiguity
Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, 2015Abstract The spatial configuration of cities can affect how urban environments alter local energy balances. Previous studies have reached the paradoxical conclusions that both sprawling and high-density urban development can amplify urban heat island intensities, which has prevented consensus on how best to mitigate the urban heat island effect via ...

Mitigation of urban heat island effect and greenroofs
Indoor and Built Environment, 2013The anthropogenic developments have been causing a warming phenomenon of city centres called urban heat islands (UHI). The effect is made worse by the urban canopy characteristics of concrete, façade glazing and asphalt surfaces of building and road structures.

The Urban Heat Island Effect in Singapore
2007Buildings can influence climate. The impact is limited for an isolated building but magnifying tremendously for a city. According to Bridgman et al. (1995, p. 15), buildings influence the urban climate in five major ways: by replacing vegetated area, presenting blocky and angular buildings, releasing artificial heat, disposing rainfall rapidly, and ...
