Upcycling of Disposable Face Masks into Water‐Resistant and Flame Retardant Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Disposable mask waste is upcycled into lightweight polypropylene‐based foams with tunable porosity and composite architectures reinforced by ear‐loop fibers. The sustainable solvent‐based process enables upcycling rates of 91% and solvent recovery of >90%.

Transient Heat Production and Release Profiles for Wood Stoves

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2018
Combustion of wood logs in wood stoves and fireplaces occurs through a so-called batch combustion process,i.e. it is a highly transient process where most parameters change during the combustion cycle.

Nano‐ and Micro‐Sized Solid Materials Used as Antiviral Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Due to the rise of viral infections in humans and possible viral outbreaks, the use of nano‐ or micro‐sized materials as antiviral agents is rapidly increasing. This review explores their antiviral properties against RNA and DNA viruses, either as a prevention or a treatment tool, by delving into their mechanisms of action and how to properly assess ...

Improvement of Combustion Air Preheating in Combustion Equipment Using a Heat Pipe [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences
The article examines the innovative use of heat pipe technology for the effective recovery and utilization of waste heat, with a focus on small- scale heat sources where a considerable portion of thermal energy is typically lost. A representative example

Ignition of Deflagration and Detonation Ahead of the Flame due to Radiative Preheating of Suspended Micro Particles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We study a flame propagating in the gaseous combustible mixture with suspended inert particles. The gas is assumed to be transparent for the radiation emitted by the combustion products, while particles absorb and re-emit the radiation. Thermal radiation

The Promise of Solid Lubricants for a Sustainable Future

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Lubricants are vital for technology, saving energy and resources. The industry seeks sustainable solutions beyond fossil fuels. Solid lubricants offer extremely low friction and reduce environmental impact, especially in harsh conditions. Can these solids truly replace liquid lubricants, or are they limited to extreme applications?

Transient CFD Simulations of Wood Stoves with Varying Heat Storage Capacity

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2019
In the present work, transient CFD simulations of full wood log combustion cycles have been performed to study the time dependent behavior in cast iron and soapstone wood stoves. A model for the gas release is developed and implemented.
