WinGEMS modelling and pinch analysis of a paper machine for utility reduction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
A multi-ply paper machine process model was developed using WinGEMS and the stream data produced was used to conduct a pinch analysis. The product stream was excluded from the analysis and the composite curves display the enthalpy contained only in the ...

Heat recovery from mineworkings: opportunities in the Glasgow area [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Glasgow is one of many locations within the United Kingdom once dotted with a number of thriving coal mines. Before the suitability of the water stored in mines can be determined for use in ground source heat pump (GSHP) heating applications, it is ...

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Real-time optimisation for a heat-recovery section with equipment degradation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
[Abstract] This work aims to optimise the operation of an industrial heat-recovery section in a fibre-production factory. The section is formed by a network of heat exchangers able to be supplied with different hot sources.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Assisted Heat Transfer and Shaft Work Targets for Increased Total Site Heat Integration

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2016
Total Site Heat Integration (TSHI) provides a valuable framework for practical integration of multiple energy users. Previous studies have introduced the idea of utilising process heat recovery pockets to assist TSHI.

Shape-from-shading using the heat equation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This paper offers two new directions to shape-from-shading, namely the use of the heat equation to smooth the field of surface normals and the recovery of surface height using a low-dimensional embedding.

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Low Potential Heat Recovery Using Heat Pumps

open access: yesThe Annals of “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati. Fascicle IX, Metallurgy and Materials Science, 2012
This paper presents a study on the possibility of recovering low thermal potential heat from the cooling technological water of industrial processes. The analysed solution consists in the use of a heat pump which would send the recovered heat to a hot ...
